Look, "company culture" is another way of saying "eliminating ANY form of individualism that our employees might possess". All these extra-curricular activities, like team breakfasts, or team meals out etc are 169% UNACCEPTABLE. You go to work for one thing and one thing only: money. It is a transaction. It is NOT a relationship. There is zero commitment, on either side, other than that spelled out in a contract of employment.

My brother, who has been self-employed for the past 34 years after coming out of the army told me many moons ago, "there is no such thing as loyalty. If I am getting paid £200 a day by this cunt, but another cunt over the road offers me £250 a day, then I'm going over the fucking road. End of".

Live your life with the same lack of giving a shit and you will do well. NEVER waste your time tricking yourself that a job you are applying for is a job for life, because it isn't. Whatever they are offering you RIGHT NOW is ALL that matters. They might go bust, get bought up and put out of business, or they might just out-source or off-shore your job function, then off you must fuck.

It's a job, nothing more, nothing less. Fuck all this "team" bullshit.

Now imagine this guy is your boss and your wife has cancer. You have to get two kids out the door every morning, home from school, fed, bathed and asleep every night.

With only so many hours in a day, where does one draw the line between adopting this or similarly cold, hard and sober advice such as "What have you done for me lately," versus his taking up some kind of moral obligation, it seems, to ameliorate the various plights in other peoples' lives over which he had absolutely no say in their being dealt?

You draw it at the point where everyone thinks you are being fair and giving the employee a chance to get past the hard period in their personal life. You also are free to hold back their progress to any promotion/reward. And if the employee seems to be taking advantage of the situation you can call them out. But if someone's dealt a shit hand in their personal life, you can't just fuck them over without risking a really bad signaling effect to others in your organization who could reasonably find out what an asshole you are. The line is drawn basically by the moral compass of the collective. The shitty thing about law firms is that a) that moral compass is generally broken, and b) even if it wasn't the other people in the organization can't do shit about an asshole partner who brings in a ton of cash. This is why aspies are better suited to firms and have their progression limited at megacorp inhouse.

Some places are much more pleasant to work at than others, and culture is a factor.

Actually a bit surprising from a Gen-Xer. Most of them are corporate bootlickers. I agree -- lol at anyone who is really into being a worker drone at some job. But I'm self employed so obviously I feel differently than most.

Being a corporate bootlicker and not having any loyalty isn't mutually exclusive.

90% of companies would fire their employees with no notice and no severance if they found a better replacement or could add .01% to their quarterly profit. Loyalty is absurd in this day and age.
