I've mentioned it to the partner in charge of my development or whatever and he assured me that, while not ideal, I'm not going to get shitcanned this year or anything like that (he's a good guy, I believe him), and stuff is slow generally but it just isn't a great feeling--the other people in my practice group have been slow at times but not as much as I have been all summer
Given the way the assignment system works I don't think i'm getting frozen out or anything, and it's chill to draw a biglaw paycheck with low hours, but makes me feel uneasy |

I was in a similar situation as a first year - deal flow was way down and mid/senior level associates were hoarding all of the first year work on the few deals that came through. I was given the green light to branch out and ended up doing some work for the litigators and bankruptcy folks. That lasted for about 18 months and then deal work picked back up. Fast forward several years, and that little bit of experience in litigation and bankruptcy paid off when I moved in house. Since you're a first year in a specialty practice, I would suggest hitting up the commercial litigation, M&A and bankruptcy partners first. Obviously I don't know how much my advice is worth since I could be slowly tanking my career, but:
1) Take opportunity to ask partners in any sort of 'mentoring' capacity that you have about the situation--explain your concerns, at least show that you're engaged. Ask if you can ROOT AROUND in other practice group matters
2) IDK what your firm is on pro bono, but pick up a project where you can at least sink hours on end into it (like something research intensive).
3) You're going to get buttfucked any day now by a new matter or case or deal, so just try to enjoy this |

I basically have about 5 months of 30 hours and 4 months of 200.
