i'm a solo in a specialized area of law. an agency reached out to me about a potential 10-15 hour contract gig bc my resume was apparently on file. agency said they're offering $50. i said i wont work for less than $75 but i need to talk to the lawyer to see exactly what it's about. so she says she'll submit me at $75 plus her cut (which isnt disclosed to me), and i say fine.

i interview with the guy and he seems to really like me and want to work with me. i ask him discreetly about the money and he says he's willing to pay what it takes for good people, and he also said he has no idea what their cut is either and he uses agencies bc he doesnt want to deal with liability of hiring anyone directly and deal with tax forms.

turns out the gig requires more skill and responsibility than what the agency sold it as, so i feel like i should get more money. how much room do i have to negotiate?

i've gotten ~$125-150 for doing this sort of contract work before, but directly with other lawyers. if they're able to bill me out at $300+, they're still making a killing. with the agency involved, i feel like even at $100-125 plus the agency fee, this lawyer should be able to pay if he wants good people.

As a rule, temp agencies get your hourly rate just for managing you.

Don't you bill differently for these jobs as opposed to actually working for the firm?

Say you come in 9-5:

You bill the firm a flat 8 hours

You also submit another time sheet with billables?

it would be working from home. so, i'd be getting paid for billables only.

how would you have different billables and hours worked if you're working from home? every minute i spend doing anything related to this matter would be billable time.
