In college I boned to albums by these bands countless times

But I've never heard of anyone else listening to them

I heard a Talk Talk song in trader Joe's once though

They were like an 80s synth band but in the 1990s they took on a more sophisticated vibe, idk

laughing stock and spirit of eden were both 180. I liked their experimental phase better than the early stuff.

I was introduced to them with laughing stock too. recently i started listening to the classic alternative station and the 80s station on sattelite radio and a few of their 80s electronic singles came on and I was like "wtf, is this even the same band?" and i looked it up and it was.

not really into their commercial period personally

180

Listening to that album RIGHT NOW

The first track triggers so many memories, fumbling naked to open my huge fucking mid 2000s laptop and opening iTunes to play the album as the girl's frustration and anticipation rises

talk talk is pretty famous. their last two albums always end up on "best of X" lists and some of their other singles are still on 80's radio.

I view those albums as like a swan song of an alternate reality, like what 80s music would have been if it had been left to evolve instead of being overtaken

Like I hear a deep longing for relevance when I listen to them

they were adapting influences from something called "rock in opposition," a loose 70's/80's "movement" of bands that tried to incorporate nontraditional structures into what would normally be pop songs.

i never cared for most RIO stuff since a lot of it ends up being dissonant for no point, but some of it was kind of interesting. here's one of the more listenable RIO acts:

everyone loves talk talk. it's intergenerational even. i remember partying with friends parents at their jersey shore houses and the soundtrack would be talk talk and kate bush. they also have a lot of good early stuff for the postrock hipsters
