"The process of accepting the loss of zeke is the process of reconciliation between our sensate experience as brothers of the bort of that strength and greatness in all that we do, poast after poast, thread without end, and the temporal limitation of existence constraining us all. It is, in short, the poastness unto death."

'I don't accept that.' "There's nothing to accept or not accept--your complaint is the act of the psychological delaying the inevitable of the biological--there are no holdouts from deathbeds." 'And yet I reject it. How many bodies will we permit biology to heap, generation on generation, cowering away in dark corners of human ignorance? The time to fight back is now.' "Bold but empty words--what would you propose?" 'If zeke has been taken from us, we bring him back.' 'You speak of--' "the conquest of death, yes. And more." {gazes into amber globe atop his cane; grasps interlocutor's hand} 'Come with me.'

The tall trees encircling their camp whirlened and gyred, green-topped corinthians swaying to the vital pulse of nature in the early autumn air. In the canopied distance, a metal flock rode the currents warm and cold, dipping and diving silhouettes glinting through the russet haze that lay upon the valley. The man and the boy had set their watersogged boots and packs near the warming fire, their thick woolen socks reclining nearby against the rough limestone of the riverbank. They ate hungrily from compression tins, great heaps of preserved pork scooped up as they stared unblinkingly into the flames, eyes tearing from the stinging smoke, shoulders slouched. The man cleared his throat, breaking their exhaustion reverie; turning to the boy, catching his gaze:

"What is the nature of the loss of zeke?" The question returned in head-tilted puzzlement: 'He died his death? You said last night: 'biology.'' "No. Biology is the cause, but it is not the quiddity of the event. Zeke left us because of a loss of belief." 'What does belief have to do with death?' "Watch your words. Death is seen as insurmountable but loss, perhaps, retrievable." 'Fine. What does belief have to do with loss?' "Zeke saw the true-grain undergirding the world. The soft, intelligent movements of birds and bees; the bright boys obscured beneath mens' clothing trudging their way to work; the fear besetting the so-called experts of our past. His vision drew on the power of a belief to see into the subsurface of the universal fabric." 'And?' "When that belief faltered, he began to fade."
