Compliance at a megabank is actually pretty much the pinnacle of law. That Wells Fargo SCRA fiasco that is going to cost them a billion dollars or more was a compliance failure. If we do shit right the litigators get no work. And when we fuck up we work with the litigators for the next 3 years fixing the disaster.

You get a VP/AGC title so no one can tell whether you are strictly speaking compliance or litigation. You get a megabank on your resume. You interact with regulators at the highest level. You can jump to the OCC/SEC/FINRA whatever after 3 years if you want. You have a non-zero shot of making ED or MD after 8 years. Its tough but it happens. The job security is basically 100% after 3 years. Make it 3 years and they will basically never fire you. And the work is as interesting as anything in law can be. You get to interpret new-regs, write procedures, train the business, etc.... Beats going to court like a little bitch.

You're still sitting behind a desk in an office working long hours for someone else. Absolutely soul crushing. The "pinnacle of law" is solo practice where you control how, when, and where you work.

Same. And it wasn't even spread out nicely. Lots of weekends and all nighters. Meanwhile, I have never pulled an all nighter in-house. Yes, it is 50ish hours a week but that includes a bunch of stuff like training. You can't overestimate how much the requirement to bill your time makes the job crappier.

So no one's life was at risk? Families weren't being torn apart?

You need to stop thinking of them as emergencies or fire drills. They're just sudden, unexpected times when you need to do your job. So do your job but recognize that a bad outcome might hurt some business unit's quarterly numbers a little bit, but that's very unlikely. You'll relax a little, do better work and have more fun.

The job is being a button man, like in the godfather. Clients and bosses push buttons, and you deliver and they keep you spaghetti.

How does any of that make working all day without days off better? i could do a better job of keeping things in perspective but if im at the office from 9 am - 10 pm im not doing other shit in my life like spending time outside or maintaining friendships or going to the gym routine ("you cant go to the gym at 7am??")

you know for a fact that you have time you could fill if you worked more effectively and didn't procrastinate

in a year or so partners will begin to respect you when you say things like, it's my mom's birthday, I'll be back online at 11

also, by then you shouldn't have the same expectation of facetime and can take time out of the office, especially going home at 6 most nights if your hours are good

but you have to earn it and you're in the earning time period, where every sees you as a fungible billing unit. Earn respect and get good assignments and make hours and you suddenly are very valuable. When you're doing that you're making the firm 4-5x your salary. They will let a lot more slide.

lol, it gets worse brother

But keep your hours up and earn partner respect and the parts you don't like get somewhat better. But now you have responsibilities and real stress, not just stress from not being able to see your friends. Then you're trying to eat breakfast. Then you're trying to get equity.

Every step the old problems get better and the new ones are tougher.

in a way, you should be carrying yourself in all walks of life in a way that earns the respect of others. If you're doing biglaw you should desire to be there and have the time spent serve a specific purpose in life. That is, you should not be drug along by those willing to use your time for their benefit, who care nothing for you, solely because you have no idea who you are or what you want to do or why you are there

I don't think that's a fair characterization because Joel Osteen is a career huckster and you opened the implied premise of this thread with the constituent psychological parts of being a man. I identified a way in which you bring a biglaw system into line with those parts. Of course it's hard and people can be very miserable, but that's not inconsistent with what I said, either.

not for long. striking out on my own, or at least going to a much smaller firm, in the near future.

small firms can be way worse

more pressure earlier and far more mercurial

at least at biglaw you know it's all about money

and yet, because biglaw jobs are generally concentrated in high tax, high CoL shitholes, it isn't even close to that. also this first year bro probably has massive debt too

i'm not in law, but do you ever get jealous of those blue collar guys who are general contractors, or own their own business? Or, the guys who work those huge trucks in mining industries, etc? they obviously aren't rich, but man, they seem to really have fun on the weekends with ATVs, Jet Skis, etc. Something white collar dudes can't, or don't have the time to do.

I'm not in law either but working an office job makes me jealous of people working in the restaurant industry. like working at a cool spot in malibu or something, making enough to pay rent, buy burritos and weed. surf all morning.

yet you want to go to law school and do biglaw. i dont blame you for your internal contradictions bc i am the same as you peterman but you wont know how much you appreciate free time until you give it up.

There was a fear among earlier capitalists that wage work itself was incompatible with being a man. The notion that a man coming into work every day to be told by another man to do a particular task would be so psychologically distressing so as to create social upheaval. Before like 150 years ago most men led relatively self sufficient lives.
