I'm a solo so I do sales in that I need to find potential clients and turn them into clients. I like this much, much better than actually doing the legal work once they hire me.

Do you have a JD?

nothing like assuring the client and giving them legal arguments, getting paid...then you got to write and file shit.

CR. The 180 feeling of selling a client and getting a nice deposit in the trust account followed by the 120 crushing feeling of opening Microsoft Word to start typing.

that is the legal experience from shitlaw solo through wlrk. the pitch, the brilliant legal tactics and strategy overview, the retainer deposit...then opening lexis to "pleading standard" + "elements" + "cause of action" + "reverse eminent domain."

no

sales is crazy stressful for years when you start out and have to both build confidence and put money on the table. the best salespeople either a) have something to fall back on so the stress doesn't get to them, or b) for more people who started with real prolesales they just didn't have a choice

no, my dad did though

started up as a coked up loser who couldn't get any job because of his light record beyond shoe sales. by the time I was a kid he averaged 30-65k a year (mind you we grew up in are country so this was more than enough to have a decent life and my mom worked part-time in down years), mostly in furniture but he made the most money over a 5 year stretch selling cable to people who were bootlegging. he was naturally good at it but pretty much did it for lack of other options

tough to crack into $$$ sales as a real not-college educated prole though. insurance etc. is possible but more or less a lottery; same with cars (and it's not like you have high margin luxury dealers in bumfuck anyway).

i have two websites that sell medium-end services (think $2k-$10k) with 60% gross margin on each.

i'm good at selling the services but hate how monotonous it is asking the same questions and hearing the same story every time that i don't even call back most people who come in through the site.

So basically people just look at the site looking for the service or whatever you sell/subcontract and then they call you?

yeah, the websites are lead gen. people submit their phone, email, other info to request a consultation or quote (depending on site) on the services. i give them my shpiel and they think about it, and we generally have 1 or 2 more phone calls.

about a third of leads close. i bill half upfront and half at the end and lightly manage my contractors

no - actually i hear from my friends in the SEO and PPC world that legal leads are quite expensive to fight for.

my leads cost a lot less because i'm going after premium buyers of a service that usually costs a lot less ($1k-$2k or less). so most of my competitors are fighting for scraps and i have better branding fighting for the high end

That's really impressive.

How did you even end up setting up this business in the first place? Just research or part of an industry you've worked in?

thanks man, yeah, i used to practice law but knew how to program and write html/css. i was bored as a lawyer and would make a lot of small side businesses that would make me either 0 or like $2k per year. doing that a bunch of times taught me about SEO, pay-per-click campaigns, copywriting, how to write good e-mails, how to make yourself look like a real local business instead of a scam page, etc.

these 2 niches i'm in now i heard about from friends and did more research myself. put up landing pages, got my SEO house in order, and the initial results looked promising so i just kept building from there.
