Weaponizing Social Media: “The Alt-Right,” the Election of Donald J. Trump and the Rise of Ethno-Nationalism in the United States
By Robin Andersen
Nowhere has xenophobia, racism and misogyny challenged International Human Rights Conventions, humanitarian principles and the core values of Cosmopolitan solidarity more than in the United States with the election of Donald J. Trump.

In addition to fake news stories that inflamed the internet and were left to stand as truth, mainstream media spent far more time on Clinton's emails than on refuting Trump. A glaring example occurred on October 16th, when Trump gave a rousing speech that merged economic issues with the old hatred of "Jewish Bankers." The speech, with its implied language, was written in the signature style of Stephen Bannon. At a rally in West Palm Beach, FL Trump claimed that there was a "global power structure that is responsible for the economic decisions that have robbed our working class, stripped our country of its wealth and put that money into the pockets of a handful of large corporations and political entities." He also claimed that Clinton "meets in secret with international banks to plot the destruction of U.S. sovereignty in order to enrich these global financial power" and that the election may be in fact controlled by a small handful of global special interests rigging the system. Ironically, there is much truth in these accusations, but Trump is not the candidate to challenge global financial capital.
