already happened in taiwan. a rich guy from hong kong was kidnapped. kidnappers demanded bitcoin.
the three weakpoints of a kidnapping, where it is easiest to get caught, are 1) the taking, 2) communication (tracing calls and internet connections) and 3) the acceptance of the payment (cash handover)
and cryptocurrency basically eliminates the third one.

1. police found them and rescued the guy. probably by tracking down the kidnappers' cell phones or by looking at surveillance footage of the kidnapping and tracking the movement of the vehicles.
2. bitcoin is not the best choice, as payments are eminently trackable on the blockchain.
a prudent kidnapper would use DASH, Monero, or Zcash, which are altcoins that have built-in automatic anonymity.
but even with bitcoin, there are mixers that jumble up the dirty coins with other coins and obscure the trail.
