Not talking NY/CA/DC/etc. obviously. How about the TRUMP nation aka rural america? Looking for cheap COA, family-friendly, 'pillar of the community' types of places. How hard to cop those? TYIA.

It's not difficult if you have (1) either good credentials or experience, (2) a deep-rooted connection to the community, and (3) the patience to apply more than once while living in the community.

THat sounds weird, but for the competitive offices, I would say the above gives you no more than a coin flip shot. But I would be fairly confident of my ability to get into an are-country office with those three.

-AUSA in a district that's neither big city nor are country.

FWIW my office is about half HYS grads. But plenty of non-clerkship, non top-firm lawyers who were from area or who got trial experience.

AUSA is a trap for most T14 dipshits anyway. you're not likely a really good trial lawyer or a good 'investigative' mind that knows how to build a case. most people who take a AUSA job for the prestige or stepping stone value end up being fucking awful at it and don't do much save for tread water for a few years.

if you want to try to weasel into a better associate role in the future, you're way better off trying to go fed at a regulatory agency of some sort. SEC is the obvious one, but you'll find those jobs are even more competitive than the DOJ.

you're qualified for most of them. whether or not you can get hired or they'll do anything for you in the long run is a whole different question.

as a cap markets paper-pushing bitch, you're actually well prepped for most federal agency roles. most of those jobs are basically pseudo-legal practice at best. jobs like AUSA or working of the US trustee actually require lawyer skills, trial ability, and other stuff that makes you an attorney. cap market document jerk-off stuff grooms you for the redundant bureaucracy of government work.

and i didn't say AUSA is not good experience. what i said is that most people who have the right resume for it are not actually cut out for the role and don't do much with it.

like 5-10% at most of law students at decent schools have the ability to become good courtroom litigators.

Right, you qualified your assertion with whether one wants to weasel one's way back into a large firm.

Even so, as an AUSA you get all the experience of a SEC enf cos, and a lot more. SEC ajudications and trials are handled by special counsel.

FERC is definitely not that competitive, EPA is slightly more. FDA is a crap shoot I guess.

None require any sort of technical background.

Also, there are EPA legal positions located outside DC at the various regional and district offices.

FDA lawyers can do a rotation in Brussels I think.

I knew a guy who worked in a prestigious district who was desperate to get out and work in a lower COL flyover district. He had like 5-6 years experience as an AUSA, plus a couple of years of V10 biglaw and a pretty prestigious federal clerkship. Even with all those credentials he had to interview in like 7-8 different districts before he could lateral. Most districts outside major metro areas are usually pretty small and have infrequent openings

Interesting. If my end goal is gov, does it make more sense to do a stint at a firm first OR do JAG then try to cop one of these gigs? Did some research, and it seems like JAG won't get you real practical skills for the private sector, which is fine as long as I can transfer to gov.

I think JAG to AUSA isn't uncommon.

The best deal is probably doing 20 years on AD, copping dat military pension and then getting hired as a GS-15 civilian.

Here's a problem I confronted: LA/NY/Chi have constant turnover because the exit options are great and government pay doesn't cover much more than rent in those places. In Kansas, AUSAs might be some of the highest paid lawyers in town, there are no exit options, and the salary easily covers an extravagant Kansas lifestyle. So no one ever leaves. I landed SDNY/CDCA level interviews (but no offers). I couldn't land an interview at my home town USAO. They called and were like "yo like 3 years ago we basically told the guy we hired that we'd give home the next position that opens. Better luck next time."
