Basically bought a few of the major brands like GE, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Kenmore (mostly same as other makes) filters and shipped them off to a Chinese injection molding plant. There are only like 5-6 unique shapes.
The legitimate OEM filters are $50+ each and dumb boomers buy them every year thinking it helps their water taste good. They're nothing but a basic charcoal filter wrapped in a proprietary package.
Chinese plant builds them for $1 a piece. Buddy resells them under a bunch of fridge part numbers for $25 each on Amazon. He creates a dozen different "brands" all selling the same knock-off filter to bully competitors out of search listings or just confuse boomers who see bad reviews for one of his brands. No scamming here bc the filters work as well as the real brand and all say "guaranteed compatible with manufacturer's part xyz" in the listing.
Shrewd?

First year made $100k after capital outlay to get inventory built up and work through teething pains with the injection molding company (fucking level of Engrish there is unreal). This year $300k. Next year he's expanding into other markets like home heater dust/pollen filters.
Seems smart as fuck to be honest. He segments his market too. Created a "premium" line that he sent out to various mommy bloggers plus tons of 5-star reviews that sell for a $10 discount under the OEM part for people who need confidence that it's legit. Then he has a bargain basement line where he doesn't even put a nice label on or write any ad copy.

i hope he has a tight LLC setup to protect himself from personal liability. the reason GE, 3M price their products so high is to account for all the lawsuits, contingencies etc
So he better hope that he is lucky wrt lawsuits. if you are importing shit from china as a one man operation avoid anything that deals with purification, health etc.
