1. maintaining a healthy body weight gets you the vast majority of the healthy-living advantage that you get over the general population in terms of blood pressure, blood sugar, kidney function, etc.

this alone gets you to a 160 LSAT. you're doing better than most here just by not being fat.

2. *not* smoking or being an alcoholic is the second most effective thing.

this gets you to a 165 LSAT

with JUST these two things you are doing way better than the average person. and you're doing nearly as well as the healthiest guy around. you may even outlive that guy because genes will be making more of a difference with #1 and #2 being equal.

3. frequent exercise

okay, you healthy fucker. now you're at a 170 LSAT. 98th percentile. you're pretty fucking close to maxing out your health here.

there's no point of even listing anything after this, the list really starts dropping off. EVERYYYYYYTHING else that you fuckers argue about on this website. low carbs, low-fat, magnesium deficiencies, avoiding animal products ... this is all just going towards getting to a 171 or a 173 or a 175.

i really think a lot of people are missing this. because if they understood this, they would not be arguing very passionately about these little things.

Atherosclerosis is a "very common" disease. The majority of the population is overweight. Beating the average is not an accomplishment.

You can maintain a healthy weight and have 185 ldl. Exercise improves ldl, though likely won't completely fix it, and not eating meat is easier than running 6 miles a day.

agree that there is very much a pareto distribution, but being at a healthy weight is also the hardest thing for many people and it's much easier to neurotically obsess over magnesium than to eat less food.

So if I eat a really bad fast-food diet -- but maintain a low BMI, avoid tobacco/alcohol, and do some exercise, am I good?

This is more or less what I do. I just can't get myself to eat "healthy food" on a regular basis. But I have maintained low BF% since high school.

how bad do you mean exactly? diet is more important than exercise for weight (although both are still important and exercise has many other benefits) so i'm a little skeptical that it is truly that bad compared to others and yet you have a low BMI

I agree with the message, but this looks like the opposite of a Pareto.

Pareto distributions generally have heavy tails and are generated often by 'winner take all effects'. So like the 0-80% actors are baristas who never get anywhere, whilst the top 0.1% or whatever are killing it. It is also characterised by accelerating marginal returns: getting from the 50th to the 51st percentile matters way less than getting from the 2nd to the first.

Health (whether cashed out in lifespan, healthy life expectancy, etc. etc.) seems sort of normally distributed, but lots of substructure wrt race, sex, class, etc. This partly explains why 'lifestyle stuff' only can have a limited effect - if you have shitgenes for something, you can get pwnt no matter how carefully you steward your lifestyle.

In terms of health behaviour, all the 'healthy' things (or cutting down 'unhealthy things') show diminishing returns. Doing somewhat frequent physical activity for 20% of the time of a triathlete fanatic gets way more than 20% of the health benefits; cutting your weight from obese to a bit overweight is the great majority of the benefit of going from obese to normal weight, etc.

In terms of the list I pretty much agree, I'd break it down this way:

Do do these (in order of importance):

1. Do physical exercise a few times each week.

2. Don't get fat

3. Have a non-retarded diet.

Don't do these

1. Smoke

2. Drink excessively

3. Take 'hard' drugs

Follow that and you've beaten most people in the US, and have given yourself a good shot of a long/healthy life. Other stuff may help a bit too, but probably is only worth doing if you enjoy it for its own sake.

it's a pareto distribution in that those six things you listed get you 99% of the way towards your maxed out health. then there are about 1000 other "good" things you can do to improve your health but won't do much. those 1000 things comprise the tail. so it's winner-take-all in that those 6 things are responsible for nearly all your gains, brah.
