Wife made about 125k in 2016 (she is corporate counsel for a company close to our house). This puts us at slightly over 900k for the year.

I'm thinking about writing a book and giving seminars on solo practice and marketing. Willing to take some questions today though as well.

Mostly personal injury. I do a bit of criminal and some wage and hour/FEHA cases too. Since PI is contingency, the return on labor is huge.

It is not common. But that is mostly because people suck at generating business. Everything I do can be taught and replicated. I started a second firm last year with a friend who dI'd family law. It is in a different suburb of LA and alrdy has 50 cases. I didn't include that p&l with this post since we've left all the cash in that business. But it should generate a few hundred k this year.

My paralegal and several contract attorneys who do discovery, appearances, etc. Car accident discovery isn't complicated and I outsource 100% of it because I hate doing it.

Currently $15-25/hr depending on who I'm using. I know several attorneys who are solo and don't have enough work that are always looking for side jobs. I also receive resumes all the time from new attorneys looking for work. Many times I will have them help with things until they are up on their feet. I've even had people I'm met from xoxo cover appearances for me while they built their practice.

My marketing strategy is: talk to a lot of people. It's as simple as that. I don't really do much actual marketing. I pretty much "network" all day long 24/7. If I am at a friends house and he has friends there I don't know. They won't leave without having my business card and without knowing what I do.

If you've ever seen One Punch Man, it's sort of like that. He says you can be the strongest fighter in the world if you just do 100 push ups, sit ups, and run 5k a day. And it sounds like bullshit. But in the show he is the strongest fighter in the world. My advise is super simple, but it is effective and works.

At this point though, my firm just generates leads without any additional effort. I've had so many former clients that I just get calls from their referrals throughout the month.

My practice areas are consumer focused. I literally just tell everyone I know I'm a lawyer and what I do, I give my cell phone number to clients and treat them well, and I go out and do a lot of activities where I constantly meet new people (shooting, bjj, weight lifting, etc). I know this all sounds like bullshit but it's not that hard.

This is absolutely true. Especially with lower income clients. They love to call me on the weekends and tell their friends "hold on, im on a call with my lawyer." It isn't much of an inconvenience and I get a lot of referrals because I make myself available. Plus, I honestly like helping people and enjoy meeting new people. So the calls can be fun sometimes.

Client's don't seem to mind. If I have bad reception, I tell them I'll call them back. They still appreciate the effort.

Really it comes down to just being a decent human being and showing them you care about their case.

Yes there isn't a huge benefit to k1ing profits over FICA. Also if you are the only employee you increase your audit chances significantly when you have low salaryand huge k1. At my income level the chances of audit go up a lot to begin with. Finally I need a salary of at least 262k or else I can't Max out my SEP. You can only contribute 25% of your salary. Max is 53k.

He knew i didnt know shit but i also didnt charge him.much. My wife is an in-house attorney and her income helped reduce the fear of taking the leap.

It's always worth it. Just make sure you have enough to keep your family afloat. I would say expect zero income for at least 6 months. Especially if you do contingency work. So if I were you I wouldn't leave without having 25-30k that you can burn over 6 months. If you can do a side practice that is upfront cash (like criminal or immigration) that is good to supplement you while you build up your contingency pipeline.

In the meantime, start going to lunch with solos in your area who do what you want to do. Learn that shit inside and out, set up a website, make business cards, start telling your friends/family you are going to be leaving soon, and once you can quit all you have to do is start taking on cases.

I had everything set up and ready to go the day I quit my job.

I went to UCLA/USC/UT for law school and graduated Order of the Coif and was on law review. I'm in my early 30s. Went to UCLA/USC/UT for undergrad too. I had my IQ tested as a child because I had ADD. It was very high.

However, until law school I always did poorly in school because I never showed up (too busy playing everquest and smoking weed). I dropped out of high school senior year, went to community college, and transferred to my undergrad. Luckily I had an easy major and did well on the LSAT. So I got into a good law school.

I actually don't do anything crazy. I'm fairly frugal. I have a 2012 car with 100k miles. I own a nice house that is slightly over a million in the suburbs of LA (which isn't a lot for my income level).

Other than that, I save/invest everything I make. My goal is to retire by the time I'm 40. I'm working on building my passive cash flow right now. My only splurge is my wife and I travel quite a bit internationally and eat a nice meal once or twice a month (cut, ruth's chris, etc).

Wife is 33. We are trying to have a kid now. I love kids and can't wait to have them. My wife is 180 too. She doesn't spend a lot of money (she isn't into clothing, jewelry, etc), she goes to the gym with me every morning to stay in shape, she cooks for me, does the laundry, and makes about 10k/month in-house. She comes home at around 4/4:30 and does house work until I'm wrapped up around dinner. I totally won with her.

It's been growing over time but my bandwidth is pretty much capped now unless I hire full-time associates. Although, my income will keep going up the next few years because the cases I get are better every year. Also, I started a second firm with a friend where I am starting to send my smaller cases and that firm is also generating it's own clients.

However, if I never make more than I'm making right now I'd be fine with that. That's enough to retire at 40 if I'm not stupid with my money.

California has actually been worse and worse for plaintiff's attorneys. They got rid of third-party bad faith, there is a string of cases that cut medical expenses at trial (Howell v Hamilton), and we have low minimum insurance coverage (15k).

However, LA is awesome for PI. Everyone drives, there are tons of cars, and people are greedy. Also, Uber has been huge. Uber carries 1 mil insurance and underinsured coverage. That means every time there is an accident with an Uber the case has insane upside.

I've done a couple dozen Uber cases. Funny enough, I've never had a Lyft case. Well, I have a couple hundred active files and about a thousand total clients since I started. So a lot of calls now are just referrals from former/current clients. I still get a fair bit of business from networking and friends/family. But at this point, my organic growth now is outpacing that.

This is 100% true. However, this can be learned to some extent. Read lots of books on selling. Those are more helpful than books on law or "rainmaking." Know how to spot what the person's needs are and then show them how you can address those needs. People just want to be listened too. As long as you don't say weird things randomly, it's not that hard.

I'm really curious as to what books he'd suggest

Spin Selling strikes me as the best high level theory book on selling that I've read

https://www.amazon.com/SPIN-Selling-Neil-Rackham/dp/0070511136/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484516233&sr=1-1&keywords=spin+selling

I personally like Stephen Schiffman's books in terms of actually lines, but that's mostly because I can say them all w/o cringing at myself (I'd suggest reading a bunch and only using what you can use with a straight face, that probably different for you than it is for me)

https://www.amazon.com/250-Sales-Questions-Close-Deal/dp/B002YX0I2G/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484516507&sr=1-2&keywords=Stephen+schiffman

Also, the op is obviously more successful than I am in his professional life, i'd probably put more weigh in anything he recommends

gee, you broke your leg in a car accident when the other guy ran the stoplight

alright everyone, let's spot this guy's needs. now, after you've identified his needs, how are you going to show him that you can address these needs?

oh, by the way, tell me more about the pain in your leg and everything that you've suffered through because of it.

you don't need to read any fucking books about selling to do pi law.

Look, in PI you don't make the sale the majority of the time after they are hurt. Most of my leads from networking are people I met weeks, months, or years earlier. When I say understand their needs, I don't necessarily mean their legal needs. People hire people they like. Clearly if someone calls me saying they broke their leg I jump into what I can do to get them a lot of money. The problem is getting the guy with the broken leg to call you. And he won't call you unless youre the first person he thinks of when he gets hurt. There are a million PI attorneys out there. Everyone knows at least a few. They'll call the one they know and trust.

i don't have a problem with this answer, but i don't think it is related to reading books about selling. to do what you are describing requires being social, coming across as smart and competent, and getting results

why don't you tell people how much interaction you have with strangers, how much time per week you spend in social settings, etc

you obviously aren't getting these clients through advertising which is great. but acting like it's something you learned from reading books is misleading

I didn't say I learned it from books. But if you don't have those skills now, the only way to learn them is to go out to talk to people and read about how to interact with them.

I socialize a lot. I mentioned before that I have a lot of hobbies. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, weight lifting, shooting, hiking, etc. Hell every single Uber driver I've ever had has my business card and knows I do PI.

okay, i just disagree that reading about how to interact with people gives you any fucking chance to learn how to interact with people

you are talking to people who are out of law school and interested in how you make so much money. instead of giving them hope about learning how to do part of it from reading books, you need to own up to your skillset and make sure these dipshits don't think it's possible.

these people are 25+ and aren't learning shit about how to interact with people moving forward. people generally go to law school because they aren't natural salesmen

I think having a partner is a terrible idea. There is rarely equality in any partnership. If you can bring in a ton of business, just hire people to do the work or do the work yourself. You'll make more money. If you are not good at generating business, your partner isn't going to want to carry you forever. There is a reason why a lot of small firm partners make start and disband several firms over the course of their career.

Plus, I don't want to ask permission to do anything with my business.

Yes. Or just learn yourself. The work isn't hard.

Even if you can't handle it, there are other options. For example, if you gave me 100 divorce cases today (or any type of case for that matter) today, I'd figure out how to get them done. I don't know the first thing about family law. If that means selling the leads or hiring someone to do it, that doesn't matter.

The work is easy. Getting cases is the part most people have problems with. I could probably teach a smart high school kid enough PI or criminal defense in a few months to be a competent practitioner. It's like chess, easy to learn, difficult to master. Even being moderately competent can make you successful if you can bring in the business.

I've gone through this in previous posts. I have a friend with an awesome office who lets me put my name on the door and use his receptionist for very little money. I also pay a little bit a month for a parking spot. I work from home mostly and come in every day to get mail, and a few times a week to meet the clients I need to meet. They have no idea that I work from home mostly.

good for you, but a lot of the bizarre numbers you throw out on here limits how useful any of this could be to other posters, if they don't undermine your no-flame credibility entirely.

just do all office space covered for $300/month!

just do ~$3,000 a year in total advertising/marketing but make sure to let people know you're a lawyer when you meet them at dinner parties!

just do $800,000 in legal fees handling car wreck contingency cases ... from the people you met at dinner parties!

This is the thing a lot of people don't get. You have to be a certain type of person to pull this off and you can't fake it. You have to be a legit people person who knows a ton of people who will help you out with shit like getting an office, people who will want to hire you for their cases, etc. Then you have to be the sort of person who if someone meets they will want to trust with their matters. Then you have to enjoy meeting a bunch of new people. That isn't actually most people and almost no one on XO. Definitely isn't me.

Oh man. I laughed really hard. I could totally see that.

But really that's an exaggeration of what I am saying. I could have done it without my friend sharing space. You can get a virtual office for $150/month that includes conference room time. Saying that my argument is to get cases at dinner parties is absurd. Clearly what I'm doing works, it's not magic. How many people outside your friends and family know you're a lawyer? How many know what kind of law you do? For me that number is in the thousands. That's more what I'm talking about.

yes it was a joke/exaggeration. i'm not saying you are flame because you're able to operate with low overhead. i'm just saying some of these things suggest your situation is a bit unique.

i'm in biglaw and not looking for tips to become a solo shitlaw king or anything.

i think you should advertise more. it's cool you're generating enough work to make that type of money largely on word-of-mouth, but then you'll have that either way. advertising if done right will definitely get you more cases that you wouldn't see just on networking, and like you said you can always just hire someone else to do the work if your volume grows that much. could also use it but only selectively add cases when your marketing brings in a whale case that will net you a huge fee. you can definitely afford to underwrite it as an experiment for a year, anyway.

to what end? he's already making well beyond 99% solo money

will advertising help him get the 8 figure cases? maybe, but it will 100% guarantee that his expenses go up and he obviously is concerned about overhead.

in his shoes, i would be all over adding in associates and making money off of their work, not trying to bring in more as a solo. making money off of associates isn't all roses, but it is nice to go on vacation and know you are still making money and you can actually not think about work for most of the vacation

a couple of things to point out:

1) calishitlaw is a natural extrovert and a friendly dude. some people have it, others don't. this is a skill that can be learned, but doesnt come naturally to most people. most people, for example, would not help out randos on xoxohth or even meet up with them irl. this goes to show how unusual his personality is.

2) calishitlaw is unusually rational and deliberate (these are qualities that can be very distinct from iq). for example, helping out random xoxo lawyermos isn't a purely altruistic act, because it creates goodwill at very little cost to himself and may in fact lead to a lot of benefit. if calishitlaw helps one lawyer become a successful solo and takes a cut of the business, it would be a pretty great pay off for him and the lawyer. most people would not think to network on a message bort, but he did.

in all, a good example of how to be successful in life.

This post made me laugh. I've gotten several referrals from XOXO attorneys since I started doing this several years ago.

Been with my wife almost 14 years. We do at least 1 new country a year (done close to 30 with her). Usually 2 weeks. The rest are just small trips to Vegas, Santa Barbara, etc. We also have disneyland passes so we go once a month. She gets 5 weeks vacation at work so she is pretty flexible.

I know it sounds gay, but a big obstacle I face with doing this is I am completely ignorant of the actual machinery of shitlaw practice. Like the advertising rules, the logistics of how a shitlaw client actually pays you, how you ethically create and end an attorney-client relationship. Etc. None of this is really taught in LS.

okay, this isn't legal advice

advertising rules are generally common sense and if you just do what everyone else is doing, you should be fine.

read through your state's ethical section and read the annotations. this literally won't take more than 15 minutes. there are probably annotations that tell you what you can't do based on people getting burned for it in the past.

in my state, you cross the line, you just get warned, and you back up. that's definitely not legal advice for your state.

shitlaw clients don't pay you if you give them a chance not to pay you. so, you get the money up front and do flat fees or you get money up front and bill hourly. if you deplete money up front and are owed more, you absolutely do not trust these clients to pay you in the future. they will not. you will ignore this advice and trust people. then you will be amazed at how worthless people can be. you will actually appreciate people who come through with their obligation to pay you. that's ridiculous, but that's how it works.

so, don't be a bitch. before you trust anyone, you withdraw.

ending the relationship? not legal advice. just end it. if you are dealing with someone who can afford to cause you problems, you probably aren't going to want to end it. otherwise, there are all kinds of buzz words and buzz phrases that you use to get out. breakdown of the lawyer-client relationship should get you out of almost all cases.

why isn't this taught in law school? because law school is greatly flawed.

I wish. I haven't had any contingency cases over a million. The majority of my income is from soft tissue cases that are worked up (epidurals, surgery recs, etc.) Those are usually 50-100k settlements. If I hit a 10 mil case I would probably at that point and do anot her business that required less of my personal labor.

I think I would have enjoyed law a lot more had I gone this direction. No regrets about leaving it, but the idea of doing something other than shuffle papers between companies is appealing.

Makes almost no difference tax wise and reduces my audit chances significantly. Plus I need at least $262k in salary to max out my SEP IRA.
