We do. They get tons of our arms and it's understood the potential of us intervening in their favor is the only thing keeping the reds out.

probably invade Taiwan

we could kick them out but it would be expensive and a lot of people would die and we would be in the same situation as before, if they don't declare all out war

that's why we didn't invade Syria, because we didn't want to go to war with a World Power over a shit-stain country that nobody (except that world power) cares about.

no oil in Taiwan, just tech/finance that we are already on very good terms with and that would suffer immensely from an invasion

it's good that we're supporting them but there's no reason to take it too far, we gain nothing tbh

cr. Status quo is best for everyone, and I think that most disinterested people know that (although there are of course passionate people on both sides). The wildcard is should China feel humiliated by it.

I think going back it was to exploit the rift between China and russia. Now it's one of those zombie conflicts. Keep in mind these aren't always bad. Great pretext for us to keep troops in the region and bolster arms sales.

There are plenty of people in Taiwan--who have won every election since independence except for two--who do not want to be independent. Their opinions range from begging for an invasion by mother China to just preferring the status quo. It's complex and their minds operate differently about this w/r/t questions re: personal identity, what it means to be Chinese (which is the most important thing to many of them), etc.

Also, KMT has won all national elections except for 2. Elections weren't exactly free or fair early on, but more recently they have been, and it's essentially single-issue voting re: independence.

It's part One China / one true Chinese identity, and all of the shame / losing face aspects that come along with the disrespect shown by an ungrateful Taiwan.

It's also the thought that while Taiwan was ahead a bit economically in the 1970s and 1980s, that China has now surpassed it and is big brother and that Taiwan is missing out.

More to the first point, but there's also a sensitivity to the Japanese sympathizing in Taiwan -- it's repulsive to the Chinese nationalists.
