It's part One China / one true Chinese identity, and all of the shame / losing face aspects that come along with the disrespect shown by an ungrateful Taiwan.
It's also the thought that while Taiwan was ahead a bit economically in the 1970s and 1980s, that China has now surpassed it and is big brother and that Taiwan is missing out.
More to the first point, but there's also a sensitivity to the Japanese sympathizing in Taiwan -- it's repulsive to the Chinese nationalists.
