Coaching my sons WINNING sports team has given me new lease on life

This year we have a team full of studs and we're all at the top end of the age cutoff. We've been crushing people. I spend all my free time drawing up plays and thinking of ways to beat the shit out of other elementary school kids. My life has been 180 the past few weeks and will for a few more weeks. No punts. First down markers are at 15, 30, 45, 60, 45, 30, 15 and you have 4 plays to get to each. (Actually, not sure about the yardage. There are 2 first downs and then a mid-field first down, then two more first downs.). |

His travel soccer team needed an emergency coach for a weekend tournament. So I practiced with them Wednesday and Thursday night before the Friday, Saturday, Sunday tournament. I actually flew like 1000 miles and took time off work for the opportunity because I thought it'd be fun. I totally immersed myself in the entire thing.
They were good but not elite. It was pretty awesome. I didn't even waste time with names, just numbers. Learned their scheme. And I tried to get them to play a lot more aggressive. Ended up going 2-1 in the pool play, won our quarterfinal game 2-0, lost the semi-final 1-0 (heartbreaker on a PK), but won the third-place match.
It was on the only trophy the team had won in years. Closest I've ever come to wanting kids. |
