for example, do vaccines cause autism? i have no idea. i have no reason to think so, but apparently the consensus is i'm supposed to consider insane the people who do think so.

abortion. i understand both sides. but how can anyone believe their side is "right"?

no, obviously there can be truth. but how can people feel certain enough that they've identified it and that strong feelings about the issue are justified?

abortion is obviously immoral. shitlibs are simply wrong on this point and on basically all matters involving sexual morality

those are two very different issues though.

people who believe vaccines cause autism are either uninformed, like Trump, or simply stupid, like Jill Stein

Abortion is more of a moral issue.

but that's what i'm curious about -- i understand that the consensus is that the people who think vaccines cause autism are insane. but i haven't read the studies and i haven't reviewed the analysis. so how can i have a strong belief about this issue? i'm not saying i think vaccines cause autism. i'm saying that there's no way i'd feel justified calling someone an idiot for believing it.

i think the motivation for getting so invested in it is that the scientific establishment is very sure that there is no autism/vaccine link, and if you think they're wrong about this you also have to think they are much less trustworthy than they are supposed to be. this would have much broader implications beyond just some children unnecessarily getting autism.

i think you should generally ask people why they believe something before calling them an idiot

there's 100+ studies saying that there is no correlation between vaccines and autism and only one that does.

the one study has a lot of fudged data, fudged because someone paid off the guy who wrote it.

i can let almost Trump off the hook here because he probably reads jack shit about science - he built his fortune in real estate and business. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't know who Jonas Salk was, or how vaccines even work.

Jill Stein, on the other hand, has a fucking medical degree from fucking Harvard, and still believes in "homeopathic" hogwash. That's either willful ignorance or plain stupidity.

Be raised in a permissive household with little discipline and have your role models be mindlessly confident people for whom every moral answer is obvious. Then when you encounter any problem the first answer you come across will be the obvious one.

You mean how does someone *logically* develop such views? They can't. Why do people do so anyway? They're stupid and use knee jerk moralizing to answer complex and uncertain questions.
