Subject: Dechert

Dechert has posted a 2.4% increase in revenue and a 1.6% increase in profits per equity partner (PEP) for 2016.

Gross revenue for the year was $911.5m (£724m), up from $890m (£707m) in 2015. Net income was down 2.2%, at $400.5m (£318m), and revenue per lawyer was down 1% to $995,000 (£791,000). Equity partner profits saw a very modest bump, with PEP rising to $2.55m (£2.03m) from $2.51m (£1.99m) in 2015.

Why would a firm be honest about this. What did Dewey report in the years before it folded? I know people who work at some of these firms and they had super slow years, particularly the entire second half of the year due to election uncertainty supposedly. Then suddenly eveything looks better than 2015? Which was a super busy year all around. Give me a break.

The firm's gross revenue grew by about 4 percent, to $682 million in 2016, according to ALM reporting. Revenue per lawyer increased by only $14,000, or 2 percent, to $689,000. The firm said it raised its billing rates last year by less than 3 percent.

The firm increased its total number of lawyers by 25, to 990. The equity partnership grew by 10 partners, to 184. (About 40 percent of the firm's partners hold equity stakes.) Because of that increase, profits per equity partner decreased by about 4 percent, to $1.005 million on average, the firm said.

Baker & Hostetler saw revenue rise 1.4 percent last year, to $642.5 million. The year of modest financial growth for the Cleveland-based firm saw its revenue per lawyer remain flat at $700,000, as head count rose to 920 from 905 in 2015.

The firm’s biggest increase came in the profits per partner metric, which ticked up 3.8 percent, to $965,000, largely thanks to a unanimous vote in September 2015 to restructure Baker & Hostetler’s partnership. The move also resulted in fewer partners receiving 50 percent of their compensation from equity in the firm, which is The American Lawyer’s definition of an equity partner.

Goodwin Procter hit a new high in 2016, boosting gross revenue by 5.4 percent to $912 million, after a year of strategic expansion and growth.

"It was a very exciting year for us," said chairman David Hashmall, who said 2016 marked the firm's fourth consecutive year of revenue increases.

There were also declines, however, which Hashmall attributed to the firm's sizable growth in head count last year. After rising 5.3 percent in 2015, revenue per lawyer dropped 1.8 percent to $1.08 million. Profits per partner slipped 0.5 percent to $1.98 million, after growing 14 percent to $1.99 million the year prior.

was a relatively stagnant financial year for Winston & Strawn, where gross revenue bumped up half a percent in 2016, to $823 million, while net income fell nearly 1 percent from 2015.

The firm topped $1 million in revenue per lawyer for the second straight year, helped in part by continuing a trend of shrinking head count. Total lawyers fell to 798 from 808 a year ago. But the full-service firm, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, plans to take a break from expanding in 2017 and will instead concentrate on efficiency and profitability. It is taking a wait-and-see approach, said firm executive chairman Richard Rosenbaum—in part because of the political climate and concerns about a move away from globalization.

Kirkland & Ellis had a 2016 to remember, as gross revenue rose 15 percent from a year ago, to $2.65 billion, as the Chicago-based Am Law 100 firm also crossed a rarefied profits per partner barrier.

The firm, which in recent years has taken steps to change an “eat-what-you-kill” reputation, saw partner profits soar nearly 14 percent, to $4.1 million, last year. That puts Kirkland in an elite tier of top-earning firms for partners, whose ranks include Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz; Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan; Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; Cravath, Swaine & Moore; and Sullivan & Cromwell.
