What are the costs associated with opening and running a solo practice?

You shouldn't be renting an office until shit gets big and you get a steady stream of work. You can work from your kitchen table and that'll solve daily commuting and rent costs.
Other than that, malpractice insurance, phone, internet, website (including web developer and someone to write proper ad copy for you), malpractice insurance, bar dues, transportation to and from business trips/client office visits/client meals, Lexis/Westlaw (or other legal research) accounts, a good business tax dood.
You should probably create a professional LinkedIn page for your law firm and that'll cost extra.
Get a web developer who specializes in law firms (they are out there). Some of these guys will just create the website (the best value could be a Wordpress special), but be sure you get someone who can write reasonable ad copy and do SEO as well.
Re: advertising, that's great, but you shouldn't open your own solo practice unless/until you have a handful of clients that you can take with you.

There are huge variations.
Practice area is a big factor, but I don't know where elder law fits.
Years in practice is also a big factor. Contrary to what some think, more is almost never better.
