Our firm only has about 65 people, we pay really well, and we've lost 5 in the last 6 months who were all moving out of the area because they just could not afford to live here. They moved to New England, Chicago, Denver, LA and Kansas City.

For non-sociopaths, that's a lot.

It's just that most of us are used to companies run by sociopaths who fire people a lot and and are so awful to work for that the quit rate is high as well.

I don't really get why companies that aren't willing to pay crazy salaries locate in SV. Yes, I get the ridiculous argument that the best talent lives there, but IRL, many people are looking to run somewhere cheaper and now that remote work is becoming common, if you get some crazy guy who LOVES SV and wouldn't live anywhere else you can just let them work remote from their 300 sq ft studio.

That's not even true anymore.

10 to 15 years ago, the best programmers were in the Bay Area. These days, they're all over the place and there isn't a real concentration, but the smarter engineers have figured out that they're not going to get rich in bullshit startups. So, while some of the good engineers have stayed, the bulk of the young talent has avoided the Bay Area... although no credible alternative has emerged.

It's not even about the best programmers. It's where the entire tech VC industry is, that's the real problem.

Exactly right. The programmers are pretty lame. Most of them are mediocre and could be replaced by people in another location at a fraction of the price. However, it's not only the place with the most VC, but it's only the place where you can easily create bidding wars among VCs and get terms that aren't absolute shite.

If that's the case then those FB and Google starting salaries don't even look that great. I mean it's not bad for just out of UG money, but when you factor in the higher tax bracket and the COL considerations, it's like making 80k in some places.

you cherry picked one listing that is a single room. there are plenty of apartments in that link that are 1 beds or studios for around 2.5k.

For all his bluster and comical cynicism due to his own autism pensive is right on wrt housing prices. 2.5k gets you a shit studio/1br in a convenient area or decent 1BR in the hinterlands (a big issue in SF due to the shit public transit--literally more convenient to live in parts of the east bay than near SF state or something). 4k is a bit much unless you're targeting nice places, but 3k in SF is basically the threshold for "not shitty" in the areas people want to live.

Like I said though, all the single people make prices out of whack as the construction is old and from an era where actual families lived in apartments. A decently nice 3BR might be 4.5k

I have friends who are at top tech companies and had roommates until 28-30 when they eventually moved out to get an apt with their gf. You can pay 3k for an OK 1br or 4.5k to split a 3BR which actually has some space. Prices are comically skewed because of all the single people

That's about right for the East side. The West is cheaper but gets a lot of fog, which isn't really a big deal but California people tend to complain and think 55 is cold.

> when you factor in the higher tax bracket and the COL considerations, it's like making 80k in some places.

It's comparable to $80k in Boston or DC. It's comparable to $50k in ARE country.

Also, Silicon Valley hours are terrible: you'll get fired if you work 9-to-5 while the H1-Bs and boot camp grads slamming Red Bulls are working 90-hour weeks.
