The idea of just having had to deal with all that shit of being an Of Counsel at some big firm in a non-specialty area for that entire time I've been gone seems so terrible, I almost shed a tear.

Don't of counsels usually have some specialized knowledge or skillsets? That's why firms keep them around.

at my old firm the models was that Partners bring in business and senior associates and of counsel manage it....definitely some of counsel are specialist, but lots aren't.

not at my old firm. Of Counsel weren't lockstep, so senior associates often made more, especially with bonus.

And the non-specialist of counsel billed a ton of hours.

It was a tip top firm. The model was actually very smart. Allowed the partners to avoid as much grunt work as possible.

of counsel wouldnt stick around at a "tip top firm" if they were billing 2500, making less than sr assoc, and had no partnership chances. play flame better

These are people 15+ years out of lawschool with absolutely no business of their own....many don't have any other option that pays as much other than being the same thing at another law firm....

Nope, fine to be lawyer if you're on partner track or a partner. At least you're getting a piece of the pie. But if you stay at the firm after they told you "lolno" you're a fucking loser.

At my firm of counsels work hard without the prospect of advancement. I'm sure the money is okay but it's otherwise the worst of all worlds.

Consolation prize title an associate can get instead of breakfast.

Usually in BIGLAW it's up or out so if you get no-breakfasted you're expected to leave. Sometimes though they want to keep you as their bitch so they make you "of counsel".
