Those types of CS hires apply to roughly 2.5% of the CS population (the top 1/4 of the top 10% of grads)

IRL and not your fantasyland of cherry picking the best cscareerquestions and Quora responses

Top schools alone graduate 2-3x as many people as they did seven years ago. Salaries are ballooning at the very high end because Stanford + MIT + CMU etc graduate 3x as many UGS as in 2010. That's only a small fraction of all the people getting CS degrees (to say nothing of the many, many more doing bootcamps and stuff that non-berkeley or UIUC state grads have to compete with on the medium-low end) and even all of them aren't being hired by FB, Google, Uber, etc.

Plus companies are finally realizing how much cheaper devs are outside the US and have really ramped up their international offices. Even western european salaries are literally half what the US is

120k in the bay area (ie 70-80k anywhere other than NYC) for a random company is completely different than 220k at Google or whatever

They can certainly make 220k if they get other offers and know how to negotiate

Point being, you don't really have any idea what the average CS grad is doing or how hard these 200k jobs are to get. Amazon is definitely the easiest but their starting salary varies the most wildly (if you don't have another offer it will be hard to crack 120-130k)

https://www.google.com/amp/www.cnbc.com/amp/2016/12/05/heres-how-much-new-grads-will-make-at-companies-like-facebook-and-google-in-2017.html is a much better idea. Paysa is garbage and not really accurate

Mind you these are the hardest jobs to get in the most expensive part of the country. If Apple hires make 130k starting out, just how many people do you think really come close to 200 of the entire cs population? And this is from a self-reported survey.

i really dont care what the "average" grad is doing. we dont care about hte "average" law school or law student or college here. we care about the prestigious, high $ shit. remember where u are poasting man

we dont spend time here saying "biglaw is a myth because touro law school grads are unemployed!" hth

Your average CS grad is far more impressive than your average shitlawgrad just by virtue of actually completing a CS degree. Everyone I know who works/worked at Google is way smarter than people I know in stanard biglaw or consulting. I don't know any legit dumb (xo standards) people who are cs grads, I definitely can't say the same for UGA law or whatever

And we do spend tons of time saying "NUTELLA/EPAH ARE THE EXCEPTION NOT THE RULE", as even they'll attest to.

Point being that you have to be way, way smarter in tech to make these salaries out of college than you do to get a random biglaw job. Many specialist surgeons make even more ton$$$ of ca$$$h but nobody is pretending 95% of us were capable of doing that instead of going to Sixigan

yes, and they get paid more than random biglaw job. i'm not sure why u are so up in arms over this

i disagree that the smartest biglawers would not be able to make top salaries in tech, obviously if they were math/STEM inclined. those are the ppl i speak to, not the unwashed masses
