These are $449 retail and you can find them on sale for $375ish. Or get Elac B6's for like $279 but with the Elac you have to do some surgery and remove the stupid metal grill they put over the tweeter to degrade the sound and get you to buy a more expensive Elac speaker. Remove the grill and you have a a set of bookshelf speaker as good as anything short of $1k in all areas except bass reproduction and only because the cabinets are too small to compete with a fuller size bookself.

For rental apartments with shared walls and shit this is all you can really get without your neighbors calling the cops.

For amplification -- Rega Brio or the new Marantz HD-AMP1 because even a 35 watt amp is more than enough for these. With the HD-AMP1 you dont even need a separate DAC.

I have an HD-DAC1 just to run my headphones by my bed. It's more than sufficient. The AMP1 has a different DAC chip but the sound should be similar since its all built to have that Marantz house sound.

The sound can be a drawback... they are meant for recording, so they tend to sound a bit too dry/flat/analytical for everyday listening

Also they aren't convenient at all for listening in a living room. Want to remotely adjust the volume, or connect more than one device to them? Now all of a sudden you need a remote-controlled preamp. And for whatever reason, there is no such thing as a inexpensive, remote controlled preamp. The cheapest one I am aware of is the Emotiva PT-100, which is $300. You can get decent budget receivers or integrated amps for less than that... but those won't work with powered monitors at all because virtually none of them have pre-outs.

They don't give you an easy upgrade path either. Want better speakers? Not only do you need to buy speakers, but you need to buy an amp as well.

Finally, many/most of them are designed to accept balanced connections, but most consumer devices run unbalanced outputs. It's a very common question and answer on forums... "Gee, these monitors sound pretty great, but they are kinda noisy, why is that?" "No shit they are noisy, you need a balanced DAC"

The other issues you mention can largely be solved with a low cost 4 track mixer. Not strictly necessary though- you could also just run a long RCA from your source and adjust it at the source.

For living room I use my QSC 12"s + DJ mixer and it works great. With movies and a $400 viewsonic hd projector it's much better than a theater.
