Why are parents so concerned about good school districts? If ur kid is smart

that's because most of the kids are not impressive
most middling/decent suburban public schools are lucky to have one hyp per year
the same kid will do better at a good private

my friend works in a public district in a secondary city.
one day some moms showed up to fight each other. their kids let everyone know. so the teachers find 2 moms tearing at each other in the courtyard with their respective daughters and classmates cheering them on during class.
she also found some kids having sex in the hallway once during.
public schools in shit neighborhoods are basically extended boys and girls clubs, ymcas, etc. just keeping kids somewhere while parents work and society gets to watch them for a bit.

i dunno. i think it depends what your goal is. i went to a mor public school through tenth grade. can remember being annoyed when i got a single a in a transcript that was otherwise straight a-pluses. it was just a normal american high school- i would have been top of my class though, or close to it.
instead it was good enough, i transferred to a ridiculously intense top private school, where i proceeded to flail. wtf is this homework nonsense? hi 61 in first semester physics. i pulled it up by the end. and i learned way more. worked much harder. but the competition and expectations were intense. and it was a lot harder to shine. i don't think i would've stood out, even had i started high school there. just out of my depth.
but by the end of it, i was looking at amherst-type schools for admission, state schools for sizeable aid- and that was mostly just cause i rocked the sat. my gpa was pretty dismal. hindsight 20-20, and whatever. but i would've gotten into better colleges with my sucky public school, and poor person sob story. i might have done worse once there. but hey, i'd have been there.

Because most libs live in "diverse" neighborhoods. They are in no way paying for good schools, they are paying for their kids to not have to go to "diverse" schools.
As much as libs want to scream that illegal immigration etc have no effect on others, none of them will send their kids to a school where teachers spend half their time teaching kids English.

so cr
I don't want my children's school experience to be either having to deal with thuggish prole bullies or some sort of azn superstriver hell.
If private school fees are what we have to pay to get them the best school experience then so be it.

Australia is not like the US. Where we live (very UMC area) almost all the kids will go to private HS because the local public HS is full of either private school expellees or FOB superstrivers. We have a few magnet HS in the city that are open to anyone passing the entrance exam but they are 90% plus full of superstrivers whose parents have literally had them spend years cramming for that exam so very few local parents want to send their kids there.
My dottr was attending the local public grade school, a very good school by any measure. The local public HS is literally across the road. However of the 105 6th grade graduates of the grade school precisely TWO ended up going across the road to the public HS last year. Almost all the rest went to private school.

sounds like the underlying reason is fear the kids aren't going to be smart enough...
"don't want to go to a school with superstrivers..." -- plenty of kids get into magnets and succeed without superstriving...sounds like you're not confident in your kid

There's something to be said for peer group. I get that Ivies like to play the geographic diversity game to some degree and it's easier to be the valedictorian from a no-nothing school in Montana assuming you perform strongly on your tests.
This white guy from North Dakota got accepted into all 8 Ivies: http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/05/us/nd-teen-ivy-league-trnd/index.html
My concern is whether or not these average public schools will prepare a kid for a top college. I know more than one kid who said that if they went to some prissy private school instead of their generic public, they wouldn't have gotten into Yale. But I know a lot of kids who dropped out of Yale and transferred to State U because their high school didn't prepare them well enough.
