Such prohibitions are indeed routine but are unenforceable in many states. Just grow a pair and threaten to sublet anyway on this basis. As an above poster suggested, post an ad on craigslist and get some interested parties. Have them fill out an application, then bring that to your landlord and say you are prepared to sublet to one of the qualified applicants. Your landlord will either take the new tenant or let you out of the lease. He is not going to litigate the issue against you, at least not if you're a lawyer and he isn't.
