Regional midlaw. Major client has asked that we hand over phone records. Apparently so their billing software can check it against our time entries.

FMA this "profession" somehow keeps getting worse

Why would you have any? Verizon keeps them for 18 months now I think but that's just another reason to make all calls by VOIP which is what every firm worth a shit does now. There should be no minute log with VOIP if done right.

this is why any good billing entry with a phone call also has at least one other task listed.

If there's any discrepancies just say you included time spent "preparing" for the call in the entry - I do that all the time to get some extra padding in

Their software has a metric for that and flags people who allocate time this way (in excess of the call time). We're already careful about keeping time accurate for calls with their inhouse people.

why doesn't the client have their own phone records

if those calls are internal then why would they trust ur phone records not to be padded too

They started comparing our time entries to their phone logs about six months ago. Now they want to check our calls to opposing counsel, experts, etc.

This is why it's best to never bill just a call. It's always prep work or after work on the same line item

I've heard that some bill review software picks up on "and" to crack down on combined tasks.

"Call with Expert McExpert, preceded by review of expert report (0.5)"

Your move, software!

I've never been hired by an insurance company, but I've seen billings to them in bad faith cases where the insured assigned its claims to my client.

Insurance defense firms seem to do just fine with making up for the low rates and oppressive rules by billing more time with more lawyers.

Yes they do lots of the more questionable tactics, including billing for multi clients at once.

Fee audits are nightmares generally.
