So your saying that if this bailout existed and actually was done by the Oligarchs it was a carefully executed plan that was done in Nostradamus-like knowledge of Donald Trump - then a reality TV star and real estate developer - entering into the field of politics within a decade with zero prior experience and rising to the highest political office in the land within two years time.

180 and well put my brother.

The suspension of disbelief required to buy into this Russia stuff is incredible. Yeah let's totally rally behind this guy who's getting crushed in every poll and too buckwild to control effectively.

What we really have here is a face-saving narrative by Democrats who got blown out, followed by a sad attempt to obstruct Trump's agenda by Democrats, the intelligence community and the press.

And keep in mind, all of this is over some relatively tame emails getting leaked because Podesta typed his password directly into a fake "Google Tech Support" email like a dumb boomer. That's the kind of hacking 12-year-old kids on 4chan do, not nation state actors. Oh, what a threat to Democracy!

1. Make billions in loans to profligate multiple bankruptcies aspirant to get some leverage. Fill his mind with nothing but Breitbart news articles and right-wing Fwd: Fw: FW: "Hussein" Obama = MUSLIM emails from your drunk uncle.

2. ... This is the quiet time, Sergey. We must wait until the moment is right. During this quiet time, let the asset generate reams of offensive material by appearing on Howard Stern show, talking about grabbing pussy, insulting fat women.

3. Activate the asset. To be sure he stands a chance, begin his campaign by insulting a POW and the nation's fastest-growing ethnic group. Ensure he receives no support from his party by insulting all of them during the primary debates. Align with various fringe groups online who post Nazi memes and frog cartoons. Under no circumstances may the asset do any research into political positions or writing thoughtful speeches. Make sure he insults the female candidate during final debates after controversial material is released.

4. Finally, when the election nears its close, we strike. Release the opposing party's pasta recipes and some slightly embarrassing political trivia that will appear on page 34 of the Times. This will bring the election season to a glorious crescendo. To ensure we are not caught, have the asset request we release this fascinating material out loud during debate.

Higher than yours, that I can tell you.

If Russia did anything, they just wanted to rattle Clinton's cage a bit. She was the presumed winner since day 1. Doing anything to help Trump was a fool's errand, and nothing much came from any of these leaks.

The idea that Trump is some mastermind or that Russia can control him because he owes them interest on real estate is nutty.

Obviously putin isn't nostradamus, but I think he was rationally very very angry about how US Russian relations developed during the Obama presidency, and was more than happy to get the GOP, traditionally very anti russia, to significantly soften its tone, and move in the same pro-russian direction as other european right wing parties.

I think its partly a matter of survival for him. While Putin is powerful, he doesn't have to power to change the massive corruption in Russian society (like Xi is trying to do) and therefore must keep the support of that corrupt system, so when the US starts sanctioning people in Russia for being corrupt when we should know better that he can't change this, he rightly sees this as an existential treat to him. Now we may not care that this could destabilize russia, but we can't blame him too much for putting up a fight.

unfortunately I don't think in our political climate (incl. during Obama admin.) we can just realpolitik this and let corruption slide overseas doing nothing, so some level of conflict is inevitable

Yeah but there's a big difference between wanting someone to win, and colluding with them in some vast conspiracy.

And this kind of stuff is nothing new. Maybe doing it on Wikileaks is new, but governments clandestinely interfere in foreign politics all the time. You don't think other anonymous press sources have ulterior motives for leaking secrets?

I'm impressed with how slowly the Russians played their hand with Wikileaks. They let it build up a ton of credibility as a purportedly neutral transparency group when the entire time it was just a sophisticated active measures operation

Maybe. But Democrats used to love Wikileaks before they attacked a sacred cow. I'm not really sure what their angle is. Assange is a weird and inscrutable guy.

At the very least, they did reveal a few shady things within the Clinton campaign, even if they were buried by the mainstream press. Democracy dies in darkness and all that. If Dems ran a clean campaign, there'd be nothing to leak.

I don't pretend to know the full extent of any of this, but I would be shocked if Russian pressure wasn't behind the RNC platform changes on Ukraine. Now such policy nudges are pretty standard as foreigners lobby US politicians all the time, but it turns into collusion if the foreigners are no longer just offering money to registered american lobbyists but offering things that could pervert "the system." You can debate the significance of the distinction in the grand scheme of things, but I think that is where the legal distinction is, and the problem for trump is that he keeps breaking the rules that keep things legally in the former box

Additionally, american politics used to be much more corrupt not that long ago, and trump's willingness to skirt the rules (if not his demeanor) may have fit in better then, but I really think that in this age of hyper information availability, people won't stand for that rule skirting for long, even if that conflicts with our short term desire for more interesting politicians

Sure but some helpful things like opposition research or favorable press aren't really illegal, nor is that what Russia's accused of doing. Stolen documents or hacked emails are such a third rail that I can't imagine any campaign going near it, nor would a foreign agent propose such things openly.

And politics is still corrupt. There's just a lot of indirection and iterated friendliness involved. The days of handing someone a briefcase of cash or making physical threats, then saying "vote like this" are long gone. Only dummies play like that. You donate to my campaign. I listen to your friend's think tank's advice on some matter later on. You give to my foundation. I pass some favorable law. You hire one of my friends to work at your think tank ...

Problem is trump has a lot of amateurs on his team. I agree that I highly doubt there were briefcases of cash ever involved, but there definitely is fishy money moving around paired with fishy official actions, though they have pretexts so maybe they aren't as smoking guns for the general public. Current confirmed examples:

We know Flynn took money from russia for that Moscow event, and Flynn's razor focus on Islamic terrorism (along with cooperation with Russia in Syria) is consistent with Russian interests

We know Manafort was paid by pro russia Ukranians, and then the RNC platform is changed to their benefit

We know Kushner failed to get financing from Qataris for refinancing 666 fifth avenue, potentially leaving him out 500 mil, and all of a sudden Trump is against Qatar even though KSA is clearly the one starting this stuff and even Tillerson agrees the demands are a bit much

In summary, trump ended up attracting a bunch of amateurs and has beens since no one thought he was going to win. The former are too stupid, and the latter are too compromised from trying to make a living to avoid stupid shit.

If and how long this takes to reach the tipping point is the question.

It's not like a receipt with a line item "bribes for killing sanctions" and requires some other damaging fact to become a problem for Trump. But it would be some evidence that he was vulnerable to whatever dirt they might've gotten on him out of the bailout. E.g. if he accepted illegal payments. So it provides additional impetus/rationale to dig through his finances. If it does nothing else it extends the investigation and gives him and his people more chances to self-pwn.

Yeah except the public doesn't give a shit about this kind of inside baseball. You're never going to see a POTUS impeached for minor procedural errors.

You need something truly malicious or clear evidence of bribery here. A guy chatting with a Russian once or twice and failing to note it on some form isn't going to cut it.
