i know a couple doods on fb who fly for the navy and air force. they're not like fighter pilots or anything, but they seem to just sort of bounce around endlessly from school to school. looks cr as hell. do they actually have to work real jobs in the military in the meantime?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. They are officers and will have collateral duties that officers have for the most part. They don't literally just fly planes.

but how do you have duties if youre constantly getting sent to some radar school or something elsewhere in the us? how serious can those duties be.

I'm sure there is mandatory training periodically, but I don't think for most pilots it's endless school after school. At some point you're a division officer doing some flying and a lot of paper pushing, ie doing the job.

there's a ton of paper work and fighter pilots, at least in the air force, work 12 hour days. lots of documentation and busywork. probably like a 50-60hr workweek with maybe 10% of that being time in the sky

i think 'heavy' pilots have it better w/r/t busywork, but they are also away from home a lot more doing shipments and shit.

not sure how the navy is, but imagine there's less BS and more chill time when they're not on the boat

im not trying to be a dick here, but i find it hard to believe that fighter pilots put in 54 hours of paperwork/week. i certainly hoap for their sake that they do not.

Naval Aviation is still one of the more chill communities in the military along with the various special forces units. Family friend retired recently at an O-6 NFO, and he fucking loved his job. It seemed very chill and fratty.

My best bro from UG was a flight surgeon in the Navy for 5 years after graduating from med school. He loved it. The Navy payed off all of his student loans, and he could take an F-18 for a spin more or less whenever he wanted.

I can't comprehend why every bro who attends medical school doesn't go this route. It sounds 180 as fuck.

in the long term youre getting shit pay compared to a specialist

copping ortho, derm, cardiology, pays off a lot more.

you either have a 20 yr career, earn a lot less than civilian physicians and all the bullshit that comes with the military or you exit and have to do another residency to get real civilian training (supper shitty when your 33 and have kids)

He's an anesthesiologist now, with some peculiar specialty that removes the risk of nurses undercutting him.

If this guy loved it (quintessential east coast stoner, touch of wigger, hippy turned successful executive father & etc), it's hard for me to imagine anyone except the most nebbish of dorks not liking it.

He also noted that ex-flignt surgeons are a very tight group, and they go the extra mile to help fresh out of Navy flight surgeons to match well, resulting in a much better residency.

Yeah. He is living XO's ideal life. CGWBT wife who, is an elementary school teacher, four well adjusted, rambunctios kids, which she had when she was fairly young so she bounced back well.

He absolutely loved flying figjter jets, and as I noted above, he was probably the most anti-meathead people of all my friends. He is going to strongly urge his kids to be fighter pilots, that is if they still have fighter pilots then.

I'm 6'4" and don't fit into a Navy cockpit seat. Maybe planes are built for abnormally long-legged short torsomos.

I don't want to do this, per se, but those gigs at least used to lead into commercial aviation gigs at major airlines which pay crazy well for very little work (given that modern planes basically fly themselves). Pretty much all pilots for mainline US flights are former military.
