at a true ttt the difference in intelligence would be clear from the hys student's basic writing ability / prose. as long as he did enough studying to know his shit sufficiently he should stand out.

difference in pure intelligence between hys students and lower t14 or t20 or something is much narrower. it's not like hys students are geniuses, for the most part they're pretty much the same caliber intellect as the rest of the t14 but did more to make themselves stand out along the way. median student at hys is not remarkably intelligent. if you can excel at hys only by gunning then you'll have to gun at a lower t14 too.

i don't know about that

when i went to LS about a decade ago we had transfers who were top 5% at TTTs and they did extremely well in tough classes in 2L and 3L

that made me think that top 5% at a TTT is not something that a median HYS student can easily get

that's a different question though

there are probably a few students at ttts who ended up there for whatever reason (let personal issues fuck them up during undergrad etc.) who could gun and do well if given a shot at hys.

but if the median at hys today is like 170 / 3.85 at a decent ug then the median hys student is at least competent and has decent enough study skills. he might not be the #1 student at a ttt because of that one smart guy who ended up there for whatever reason but he'd probably stand out amongst the sea of tards at a true ttt. top 10% should be easy if he keeps decent study habits. top 5% if he's diligent (which he probably is, even if not remarkably smart).

but unless there was some reason to think that the transfer students were extremely unusual among their class (i.e. one of the few students who ended up there for whatever reason), they should generally represent the top 5% (or something close to that threshold) at that TTT

the fact that they are beating out median students at much better schools in a head-to-head matchup like fed courts where there's still incentives to do well during 2L/3L for clerking etc. suggests that they have some kind of organizational or other aptitude that isn't readily captured by lsat/gpa

i don't doubt that the median hys student is competent but IME the top 5% at TTTs were pretty damn good

the nature of my point was that a ttt transfer to hys is not necessarily representative of the top 5% at a ttt. to be top 5% at a true ttt you're just standing out among tards. there could be some real stand-outs among that top 5% but being top 5% at a ttt just means that you're better than a bunch of dumbs.

i don't think most hys students are anything special but if we're talking true TTTs here then you have to bear in mind how dumb some of these students are. think of the average lsat and bar passage rates at some of these schools.

if that's so, then sure, i would agree that the comparison is flawed

just off the top of my head, however, the TTT transfers to our school were occasionally not even top 5%, but sometimes the bottom half of top 10% or even a bit lower. so there wasn't any reason to think that they were standouts among the top 5% guys.

now i would defo agree that a true TTT (let's say cooley) probably is packed with retards and that a median HYS student would easily cut through that class like darth vader

yeah your last paragraph is in line with what i was thinking

for just plain mediocre/shitty schools but not cooley-level ttts then i think hys students really aren't all that more intelligent on average. a very solid student at one of these places could do well enough at hys if given a shot.

this is also why i lol @ people who think they're hot shit just b/c they got into a good professional school. except for the top 5% of these schools the real smarts are elsewhere.

Top 5% at TTT are guys who for whatever reason didnt have good stats in college or do well on LSAT but have godlike work effort.

I never really knew hard work in life: was smart enough to coast to good grades all the way through college. I still don't really know hard work. Curve plus lack of interest in law makes LS hard for ppl like me.

Aren't TTT students tested differently? They have multiple choice questions and shorts answers like this:

I think you're underestimating the difference between a HYS student and a true TTTT student.

The average xo'er has never even litigated against a TTTT student, unless it was a TTTT law review EIC. The median TTTT guy is defending misdemeanors in rural counties and filling out uncontested divorce papers, assuming they pass the bar.

i think this is pretty obviously true.

the average HYS student has a 175ish LSAT score.

What's the HIGHEST LSAT score at a real TTT? Low 160's? That's a huge difference.

of course, you could have the odd genius who went to a TTT because her husband is a surgeon at the university hospital nearby...

LOL @ your friend. Definitely not "easily." Probably top 25% but not top 5%. I was top 10% at a tier 2 school after 1L. Transferred to a CCN where I ranked even higher than at the tier 2 school. The bottom half of the tier 2 school was much weaker than at CCN, but I didn't see any difference among the people among the top 10% at each place.
