A neat trick by law enforcement might have given them almost complete control over the huge dark web market that was Alpha Bay, according to court filings. Just before they swooped on alleged site administrator Alexandre Cazes in Thailand earlier this month, the cops forced the site to go down, leading the suspect to login to the market's server and start communicating with the AlphaBay data centers, a government complaint noted. As soon as he was arrested and the police could access Cazes' open laptop, they had administrator-level access to the whole Tor-hosted site.
There's little more detail on how they pulled the trick off, but it meant they had complete control of all the Bitcoin that was sitting on AlphaBay and could do as they wished with the site, which was swiftly closed. Not only that, at the time of his arrest, Cazes was logged in as admin for the AlphaBay forums, the government wrote. It was, ostensibly, a perfect sting.
Dude should have been using TAILS on a usb key hooked to his wrist. Then burner phone vpns hidden in walls and crawl spaces.
