if he was actually trying to develop a personal relationship with the reporter, the m.o. is to call him up to give him some harmless info on background, mention 'hey our dads knew each other way back when, isn't that wild' and, you know, actually cultivate a personal relationship. it's not to call him up out of the blue raving like a coked up wildman and expect a Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon connection and the fact that his surname also ends in a vowel to override every other consideration
