At age 29, i was offered a job as a head of a theological library that also served as the national archive of a major protestant denomination. It required 2 master's degrees and a ph.d. was preferred. It required 3 theological languages. I would have had to manage abstaff of 15, not counting work study students. And they required in my case, a doctorate at their school in religion with guaranteed admission to the program free of charge. So get a phd while running a department. This was in 2006. The salary offered (in nyc metro area) was 42k. Thats the reality. Many lawyers may not get this, but its shitty out there for most people.

Most of my peers from high school and college are making 250k+ in tech, consulting, or finance.

CR, tech people really really don't get it and should just stay out of most career discussion forums unless it's specified as tech-related.

I dont doubt that, but thats extremely rare and really speaks to the fact that most of us on xo live in an elite echo chamber. Thats no indictment, just a statement of reality.
