Q: Are you going to sell energy drinks?

A: Highly-caffeinated energy drinks will not be sold by Dining Services.

I don't think there was ever a caffeine prohibition. It was more like a cultural folk rule invented by Utah Mormons who wanted to invent another righteousness signal.

there is a revelation from God to Joseph Smith banning "hot beverages" which has traditionally been regarded as a ban on coffee, tea, and by extension all caffeine

Not really true. It's always been more of a virtue signaling thing, perhaps lightly discouraged but not totally frowned upon. Mormons could always openly advertise that they drink Coke even among other Mormons.

Correct. Coffee and tea are "banned" but caffeinated soda was just individuals trying to be/appear pious.

Right. And BYU is the place that Mormons who want to be/appear pious go, so it always made sense that they banned caffeine.

To be fair, the worst kind of Mormons live in Orange County in California, oddly enough. Like 100% of them went to BYU. Add in the normal OC vibe of competition with plastic surgery/fake tits everywhere and materialism, coupled with the Mormon belief that righteous people (i.e. people who "are living right") basically get blessed by God with $$$ and good careers, and you get a truly insane environment.

They used to drink wine and whiskey too. It was TTTemperance movement that caused them to stop drinking alcohol altogether.
