In other words, it was normal and acceptable where he came from to treat black people as slaves, and as less than human, rather as property. So at least it's understandable that Robert E. Lee was basically raised to be who he was. People can forgive General Robert E. Lee.
People are more pissed off at Joe Paterno b/c he basically was this moral superior figure who ended up letting children getting raped. As much Southern friends would say, "At least Robert E. Lee didn't allow children to get raped!" (Well, maybe he let black children get raped, but at least not children in general. And unlike Joe Paterno, there was no proof that Robert E. Lee allowed children to get raped.)
Joe Paterno basically crossed that line in allowing children to get raped. That's why he's considered one of the worse human beings of all time, they say he's more despicable than some truly bad people out there. |
