in any case, I've now decided that it's actually bullshit to clamp the distribution at the ends, we should literally just use a normal curve and allow tail scores above 10 and below 0. it's the only way to ensure an increment of 0.5 or whatever has a consistent meaning.

I also think we cannot distinguish as wide of a range for looks as for IQ, so if a "10" is as high as we can discriminate when it comes to looks, for IQ we might be able to distinguish up to 12 or so.
