The SNES Classic Edition Is Sold Out Everywhere, Unless You Want To Pay Double

Erik Kain , CONTRIBUTOR I write about video games and science-fiction movies and TV shows.

Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

Credit: Nintendo

The SNES mini is sold out everywhere, unless you want to pay twice the asking price for one.

If you've been unable to secure a mini SNES Classic Edition for its retail asking price of $79.99, you're not alone. Nintendo's hot holiday gadget has been selling out everywhere almost instantly. Reports of long lines on launch day abound. In some locations, hundreds and even thousands of units were sold on the first morning.

This means that gamers eager to play Star Fox 2 are turning to third-party sellers on sites like Amazon and eBay to pay for units at marked up prices. According to eBay:

The Super NES Classic Edition was selling at four units per minute on launch day.

Was selling for an average of $165 per unit, or about 206% MSRP.

Approximately 17,000 SNES Classic Edition live listings went up on the 29th of September.

This is unsurprising if still a little frustrating. Even with Nintendo shipping many more units of the SNES Classic Edition than it did for the NES Classic Edition (10 to 20 times as many according to some accounts) demand still far exceeds supply. Obviously even with ramped up production, Nintendo is underestimating the popularity of these systems. Maybe further shipments throughout the holiday season will close the gap, though this seems unlikely.

On the other hand, things could be much worse. With 1440 minutes in a day, that's only 5,760 units. GeekWire reports that the Amazon Treasure Truck in Seattle likely sold around 5,000 units in one morning. And that's just one location. Still, shoppers unwilling to line up at Target or Walmart, and those who couldn't click as fast at sites like Amazon and ThinkGeek, are now faced with a dilemma. Wait and see if another wave of units arrives, or pay double (or more) at eBay?

Invariably, we will soon see a retro N64 Classic Edition. Let's hope that by then Nintendo is able to adequately prepare for the demand. Then again, perhaps consumer appetite for these things will finally die down. At some point the nostalgia will wear thin. The question is, when? GameCube Classic Edition? Wii U Classic Edition?
