Child can't walk, eat on her own, communicate in any way etc. She is 6 or 7 now.

Mom carries her everywhere and is non-stop on social media with a new project. Even though there is essentially no hope, she sees specialist after specialist. She cares so goddamn much and the only hope she has is that there may be some breakthrough down the line that would be dependent on the treatment she continues to seek.

I can see having a disabled child as being very isolating, I think I would want to connect with people in similar situations.

Their main goal is to mitigate any discomfort or pain he may have, but I assume it's better if he dies so that they can mourn and perhaps close this chapter and have another child instead of seeing him suffer and suffering themselves and never having another child. But I am not close enough to them to ask if this is something they think about, as im sure it sets off feelings of guilt.

It's difficult as a parent to wrap my head around this sort of heaviness as it is too unbearable to think about. I'm sorry doesn't really begin to cover it.

My grandfather's brother had a mental disability. My great-grandparents had him institutionalized at like age 12 (I think this was in the 1940s) and he lived there until he died. Apparently his disability wasn't even what we might think of as severe today. My mom said she didn't even know about him until her mother told her on the day he died. It seems cruel looking at it from today, but that's just how people dealt with it then.
