Yes, they are extremely similar but I think the contexts where they are used (one as the language of web browsers, the other as an automation tool for google services) warrant listing separately.

PHP is great. You can make it work as well as any language.

99% R but jfc I really need to learn python. Maybe it isn't too important but I was under the impression that R and python were like 50/50 in industry for data science but this recent stack overflow blog post (https://stackoverflow.blog/2017/10/10/impressive-growth-r/ ) showed python is killing it in data science while R, while still growing rapidly, saw most of that growth in the places where it is already prevalent (academia, healthcare, gov, consulting)

Was keen on learning Julia for awhile but that's faded

C++11 and up is pretty easy to write. C-with-classes old style C++ is hard as fuck to follow though and the stuff of wizards (or spaghetti code).

I use C# for work already, which basically occupies the same space as Java and I prefer C# as a language (and .net core in general). Microsoft has continued to improve C#/.NET, whereas Oracle has basically been shitting the bed since it acquired Sun. Plus the java equivalent of F# for playing around is Scala, which is one of the ugliest languages in existence.

I’ve been really impressed watching C# from the sidelines. I see they opened it up and you can now run c# on Linux. I’m tempted to take a look as I need a general purpose programming language other than python to start using.

Much to the dismay of stallman I think .NET really has the chance to curbstomp the current linux desktop stack. GTK has spun its wheels for way too many years and has retarded development practices.

I think it'll take a couple more years to really be stable though. That said, they've been progressing much faster since acquiring Xamarin

for data analysis the best thing is probably workbooks

but no, not for people who aren't programmers-first. r studio was created with a stats-first mentality (which it shares in general with r) and as such has features that more closely mimick what you would've seen in other stats code environments (like SPSS)
