As I pointed out above, motivation doesn’t really matter. What matters is that you put your hand up and did it.
If everyone spent 2 years before turning 30 performing some type of service, even something like TFA or peace corps, I think the country would be much better off. It would be a good counterbalance to the 4 years of infantilization that kids get now at college. |

You have to apply for Officer Candidate School, but then you’re looking at a 4-6 year minimum commitment. Officers also (theoretically) have significantly more responsibility.
If this guy just wants to do his 2-4 years and get out, then enlistment is the way to go. |

One of the good things about the concept of military service is that it can be an environment where socio-economic diversity and interaction happens.
I’m not unsatisfied with my life, I’m rich and happy, but I think I’d have had just as good an outcome had I done Purdue aviation / ROTC; got accepted just after the first Gulf war and parents were like no way on that one. As for officer vs enlisted, sometimes they have some specific specialities that are more oriented to enlisted roles; e.g. technical roles in security and intel that private sector will pay $$$ for later. One of the other options back in my day was “high school to flight school” which was a direct path to flying helicopters / Warrant Officer. |
