actually, what they should do instead is allow employers to defer payments to later years.
lets say you are in a high paying job but plan to quit it in 5 years. they should allow employers to break up your pay check over the course of say 20 years. So a worker isn't hit with a high tax bracket on a job they are not in forever.
It would be a win win for the employer and the employee. the employer would not have to pay until later in time, which would be relatively less money because of inflation and how they could invest it in the present instead. the employee would get a stable income over more years while paying less taxes overall.
but of course, the government is doing the opposite. |

2) there was legit talk of a much smaller cut to 401k contributions and someone leaked this either as way to rile people up and embarrass the GOP into not making any cuts to 401k contributions
3) OR to make the smaller cuts seems more palatable
What this is not, is a serious proposal that will actually happen. |

Really hard to argue that some biglaw partner should be able to get a tax break on his 401k contribution. Moving people to Roth 401k is a compromise. Of course, like everything else, it’s a form of debt to pay for shit we can’t afford now. Would also embolden the conspiracy theory that the US won’t honor the tax free status of Roth withdraws when they start happening. |

One idea is to limit the amount of pretax money households can sock away for retirement saving. Such a move would likely generate significant political blowback but it hasn’t been explicitly ruled out, stirring worry among industry lobbyists.
