how do people find little opportunities or niches to make a buck? i'm always impressed when someone does something seemingly simple yet brilliant in its vision to fulfill a need nobody's thought to address

if you have that quality, do you believe it's something learnable?

It involves learning a fuckton about something a lot of other people do not know about. That's where you get an "edge" - Aristotle Onassis once said that the single key to success is "knowing one thing that no one else does"

From there it is about having the guts to pull the trigger and minimize your downside.

Outside of my job/profession I've had a lot of situations where I've purchased something like art/jewelry based on my research and "eye" for something and been rewarded significantly. The "edge" I had was the specific knowledge that allowed me to act rationally.

Yes.

I have enormous ADD that over the years of being untreated (never took pills) has been sublimated into sort of compulsive learning about certain niches. Anything that catches my interest first (necessary condition) that is also profitable (sufficient condition) or intellectually enriching and useful (sufficient condition) is something that I will probably obsessively learn about over the course of a year, drill deep into it and "mine out" the knowledge.

And often that something isn't glamorous or interesting to most people.

Exactly. Where there is widespread ignorance, particularly willful ignorance, there is opportunity.
