Anyone is free to answer, but this question is designed to finally stump Charles XII.

For the following POTUS elections, tell me the closest state in terms of the % margin between the 2 major party nominees. I will post the correct answers once Charles XII has chimed in.

1960

1972

1976

1988

1992

Okay this one is gonna rape me. Only dead certain on the first one. The rest range from reasonable guesses (1972) to total shots in the dark (1976):

1960: Hawaii

1972: Minnesota

1976: Ohio

1988: Illinois

1992: Georgia

Very impressive. You got 1960, 1972, and 1992 right.

For 1976 and 1988 you were SUPER close; both Ohio and Illinois were the second closest states in those elections. In 1976 Oregon was the closest state, with Ford winning it by 0.17%. Carter won Ohio by 0.20%. In 1988, Washington was the closest state, with Dukakis winning it by 1.59% and Bush winning Illinois by 2.09%.

The depth of Nixon 1972 landslide was insane. He won Minnesota by 5.5%. Out of the 49 states he won that year, that was his closest state. In 1992, Georgia and Vermont were the first states called for Clinton, but it ended up becoming super close, with Clinton winning it by just 0.59%, despite being a Southern Democrat. It showed the strength of the Reagan re-alignment in the South.
