Good idea. Even though ISIS really wants to get a suicide bomber on board a wide body US or European airliner and bring it down, and expanding ISIS in Africa gives them a safe haven to train and plan such an attack...but anyways it's going to counter China...

How does it not make sense? When Al-Qaeda had a safe haven in Yemen, they were able to sit back and send a suicide bomber on a KLM flight. He got passed security and onto the flight but was too dumb to detonate properly. If Niger is allowed to fall, it will happen again.

oh, you're running a retarded neocon shtick.

Fight them in Niger and Chad, then what? They run next door to Nigeria (biggest Muslim population in Africa, btw) and Sudan.

Do you want to be fighting wars in Africa for the next 20 years? China has all the economic interests on the continent. Let them fight them.

You're being retarded if you think fighting in the middle of the African desert has anything to do with getting resources. It's about fighting ISIS and Al-Qaeda so the worst case scenario doesn't happen. They could take over half of or an entire country and use their new founded state to start launching attacks worldwide. It may well mean 20 years of fighting in Africa but it will be low intensity (10 US killed in action every year) and probably need no more than 10,000 soldiers at any time.

A lot of the last fighters were given safe passage in exchange for laying down weapons. Those veteran fighters will be on the move to a new location.

Fatal flaw in your plan. China doesn't mind doing business with whoever's in power and avoids internal politics.

twist: we (US policymakers acting in our name) share this trait and knew those rebelling in Lybia were Al Qaeda, that Syrian "moderates" were flame.

Also: NO, China does not avoid internal politics as they are HIGHLY relevant to investments.

There's a difference between internal politics and caring about who is in charge. The latter doesn't matter if you are open to dealing with the current government or successor either way. The problem with US foreign policy is getting too caught up with this issue and treating unauthorized succession in foreign countries like it's a defiance of US authority that needs to be met with force. The idea that he he might be a son of a bitch but he's our son of a bitch so some commie revolutionary better not be allowed to replace him.

Lots of strategies to deal with succession- concerned with balance of power and no real pattern about Ideology (although US has tended to support more Islamist govts).

African Summits of late make clear in statement and action- West out of Africa. Seem to prefer the all-cash buying style of 180NatSoc China.
