I thought Republicans believed that, since government should pay less for peoples' retirement, they should be encouraged to save more themselves? How is this defensible public policy?

"401(k)s The White House, as the president tweeted, wanted to keep the current annual maximum for tax-free contributions ($18,000); House Republicans wanted to lower the limit to $2,400. The bill, as of this morning, would lower what individuals may contribute tax-free to their 401(k)s, to an amount about halfway between the current limit and what House Republicans initially proposed."

So a 401k cap of $10,200? jfc

As boomers age into retirement, they will continue to push this shit through, fucking over our generation in favor of their own. Boomers already have fat-cat 401ks because they happened to live through decades of economic prosperity before pushing this country to the brink of collapse, they still collect actual pensions that are LOL nonexistent for new people, they have mortgage deductions for their homes that no one can afford to buy anymore, of course they never had any substantial student loans (because they didn't have to take out a mountain of debt for a college degree), and they can collect social security comfortably for the rest of their lives.

Now the GOP wants to demolish our Gen's pittance of a fucking tax benefit to continue to pay for boomers selfish lifestyles. People plan their entire financial lives around shit like 401k contributions.

Seriously MAF right now.

Explain in detail how they are a scam for the people who are using them as they are intended - as an enormous tax break that grows their retirement accounts at a rate faster than they would get in a traditional investment account

im not saying you should take out what you've already put in. im saying planning your life around a government program, the majority of beneficiaries of which are the least likable and sympathetic segment of the population, is foolish in light of the establishment's immigration and population goals coupled with the left's push for universal healthcare.

Not contributing to a 401k means guaranteed taxes right now. Let’s see, 100% guarantee of paying the 39% income tax plus 23.8% on any appreciation on the 18k you put into a brokerage account now versus unknown chances of higher taxes in the future. Seems pretty clear to me which option to choose.

Huh? The ‘rich’ make their money in the form of capital gains, not ordinary income. Removing a long-standing tax deferral for ordinary income is a wealth transfer from those who pay taxes on ordinary income (the middle and upper middle classes) to those who do not (the negative tax rate poor and the upper class).

If the implied argument I am responding to is ‘let’s kill the 401k because it only helps the rich anyway’, then I am pointing out that the remedy does not fit the intent. If you want to transfer wealth away from the most rich (better?), then do it via estate tax or higher corporate tax rates or some other mechanism. Killing the 401k hurts scores of middle class people more than the rich.

401k is not being killed, it's being reduced to $10K. Middle class people do not put $10K into their 401ks.

I should've avoided the word "rich" because it drags out the von Mises crowd, should've said "high income"

I, for one, will be glad to see it gone. most people who have them don't manage them correctly and they end up losing substantial amounts of their gains to fees and market pwnage.

passive income from diversified sources is the only way to ensure you have a baseline that will support you even if you're sick, unemployed from a wagecuck job, or starting a business.

lolno. BOOMERS don't have 401ks

Boomers have Pension = guaranteed retirement after 20 years with highest 80% of salary and free healthcare for LIFE

It's simpler than that. Boomers are either done funding their 401k and/or they'll keep the higher "catch up" limit for those over 50 or 55. Boomers win and everyone else can suck it.

it's much simpler... Boomers never saved a dime in retirement. The companies or govt took care of them. "Millenials are lazy"

No, not that many boomers have pensions. Three majority don't. If we're going to fight the menace we have to understand it.

My parents are making almost exactly as much in retirement (SS + pension) as they made when they were working.

If they would have worked past 62, they would now be making more in retirement.

Boomers have Pensions AND 401ks. My parents are a testament to that. Next year they'll be copping social security as well.

Also, the rise of 401ks took place when boomers were just starting off in their careers, which happened to coincide with one of the greatest sustained bull markets in modern history. And their companies typically matched much higher than the current 3% bullshit (if there is a match at all).

As opposed to my parents, even though I am already out-earning them at their highest level: 1) I will never have a pension; 2) social security will not exist when I retire; and 3) the government is literally rolling back 401k limits to levels from twenty fucking years ago.

doesn't matter, for every high profile legislative failure there's a ton of behind the scenes administrative stuff getting pushed through that basically strip-mines the country for the benefit of the megarich. this would just be icing on the cake

trump can only go in the direction the force vectors carry him. stuff he wants that all the other billionaire/billionaire stooges he stuffed the administration with want will sail through unless it's so high-profile and outrageous that congress has no choice but to stop it. stuff he wants that they don't want or don't care about (specifically immigration) won't happen or won't last.

the "upper class" is not using 401k for retirement. Ideally in a country with not completely fucked up income distribution the middle class could enjoy the benefits of 401(k)s and not have to live paycheck to paycheck.

If law partners making $300,000 in Detroit aren't upper class, cart me off to Walmart.

no way does an educated rethuglican electorate let this shit slide even for one moment. The party would consume itself instantly when the educated GOPers tell the uneducated ones how much they are getting fucked even though the uneducated ones arent getting fuck cause they dont contribute anyway
