This response was dumb, and his point stands unless you can articulate a concept of "self care" that is more deep than just throwing out a counseling buzz word. "Self care" as you're using it here works as justification for a selfish person to divorce a partner who goes through a difficult period psychologically because of e.g. an illness that intensifies formerly mild mood disorders or a major life event that is deeply traumatic and taxing. There's still a fundamental question of what level of effort a partner owes to the relationship and anyone else who depends on the relationship. One can spend their whole life trying to steer toward relationships that have the benefit of a low burden of tolerance for a partner's psychological problems and various external events, or even just the potential of them, can still make a partner have problems. Love is, among many other things, the deeply held desire to want the best for that other person who is hurting, and to instinctively move toward them and try whatever you can think of to help them.

I agree (obviously) that one should seek deep relationships; and part and parcel of such relationships is sticking by your partner, even through hard times, and even if inconsistent with self-care, whatever that means.

I'd go further. First, I reject the Benthamite conception of attempting to navigate life through the felicific calculus, turning hither and yon based on the balance of pleasure and pain. A trivial objection is that Bentham misapprehended human psychology, whereas Buddha understood it - to follow the felicific calculus is to chase your tail forever, for we habituate to pleasure and comfort and demand more of it; satisfaction is rather just the cessation of craving.

More fundamentally, though, there are finer things and higher values than individual pleasure and pain. It is better to be excellent and create excellence than to hide away doing drugs, for example. Pleasure and pain should be subordinated to higher goals - use pleasure to guide you towards talent, pain to pare away amateurism. What is most human is most refined. In contrast, a man who follows Bentham will always be a slave to his pleasure and pain, meaning he can be manipulated by circumstance; which indeed was the social plan of utilitarian philosophers.

A further word on this is that virtue is virtue because it's easy and better for you over a reasonable time-scale. The real virtues are thus practical and empirically determined. I could ask, who is happier, the people who have a few deep relationships, and stand by their partners in stormy times, or people who flit from Tinder slore to Tinder slore? You might respond, well we've not randomized, etc.; even so, I'd rather try for myself the way of the more satisfied group.

Second, and even more fundamentally, there is no individual "self," as described in folk-English, divorced from other people. The self is rather constituted through a feedback loop of predicting what others think about you, integrating some rejecting some, and vice-versa, mutually. A life of pure egotism thus defeats itself, for the ego can't exist without continually re-creating itself from others - if you can't know and be known, you'll waste away from the inside, as if you've filled all the space in the world but there's a concavity at your point at infinity.

Edit:

Two further quick hits. First, many people get in the trap of re-creating conditions in other that inflicted pain on them they didn't apprehend. I suspect people who endlessly chase tail once felt rejected and alone; now they go through a disgusting charade of using and rejecting others. Morally preferable to use whores, I'd say; and not a recipe for happiness.

Second, there's much wailing and gnashing of teeth about how there are no good women, etc. This is nonsense. Over long cohabitation, a good man can normalize the views of a woman with potential. All that's necessary is human potential, and initial attraction, and commitment.
