I pray it passes. I'm sure they'll end up increasing the cap on SALT but hopefully no more than $25,000 or so.

They want dem programs for their pet constituencies? Great, they can pay for it. Don't whine assholes, the rich are morally SUPPOSED to pay for people to sit on their ass at home and have kids, remember? Maybe California shouldn't have such high taxes.

Thank you for your sacrifice Earl.

depends on a lot of factors. if you have 200K house hold income in CA with a home you are definitely going to lose some money. may not be a lot but you will lose some because of 10K property tax cap, SALT and removal of personal exemptions

Yeah but your rates go way down.

Also, $200k household income shouldn't have a house worth more than $700k or so. Effects would be negligible.

And SALT won't' really hurt because $10,000 is still allowed.

yep. and if you think the average suburban voter is going to blame state politics for getting fucked on this, you're insane. this will just be another reason for dem voters to hate the GOP, and a plausible reason for pocketbook voters to support dem candidates in red pockets of blue states. the average voter isn't going to process this as anything other than an increase in their taxes. and, to be fair, that is what it is.

i have a hard time seeing this getting out of the senate as drafted. and i think you'll see a lot of defections from GOP reps in blue states, because they will see the implications of this on their reelection bids.

i'm not a strong opponent of addressing this deduction. but the "average voter" in blue states won't be affected by this and isn't shifting to the GOP because of this bill. the GOP has a strong constituency of UMC suburban voters in blue states that will get hurt by this, and they will be pissed. there is a reason the GOP reps from blue states are pissing themselves about this provision.

you are wrong about any pocket book voters switching to dems. not going to happen when they know that dems are much much worse on taxes. also this is painful for a narrow band of people - people making 300K~700K. below 300K you might lose a little bit but not so much that you are going to seriously notice it. and these people would be educated enough to know about dems and also will have other concerns (immigration, guns, free speec etc) to switch

guess we'll see, brother. i don't think the average UMC suburban voter is primarily driven by immigration and guns in blue states. a lot of them are pro-choice and moderate on social issues, but just want "government to balance their checkbook" and "keep them safe."

Any income tax cut to the lower and middle tiers necessarily causes benefits up the progressive chain. “Huge boon” to the truly wealthy is a red herring because they are sheltered to an extreme. You want to transfer wealth? Here son, take this Picasso and hang it on your wall. Why not take a tax break that matters to working stiffs?

totally agree. putting money and benefits in the hands of the poor and middle class is great because they spend everything while the rich hoard their wealth. if you're looking for a guy to say we should work harder to fuck the wealthy and redistribute wealth down the food chain, i'm you're man. but i don't think this tax cut bill does any of that and the net benefit to the people who should have lower tax burdens (and more benefits) is minimal in proportion to the benefit received by the people that have hoarded wealth and created this hellworld of astronomical productivity gains and stagnant to declining wages and opportunity.

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/353097-senate-unveils-2018-budget-resolution

The budget would allow the tax reform package to increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion over a decade, though some Republicans argue this would not be the case because of gains from the economy.

Of the $1.5 trillion cost, roughly $1 trillion comes from business tax cuts. Individual tax cuts make up another $300 billion, and the ultimate repeal of the estate tax accounts for the remaining $200 billion.

deficit hawking is so stupid. we aren't on the gold standard, and the "deficit" is basically just a measure of how much inflation we'd have to endure to pay all our bills overnight. and we don't need taxes to pay for government spending either now that we're off the gold standard either. taxes are basically just a way to drive demand for currency and control money supply when all is said and done.

deficits matter, and any attempt to dismiss them is garbage

the proper defense here is that that deficit is going to get run up, if not by Rs than Ds. so we're in a super defective game where both parties just have to race to max out the credit card before the other one gets its hands on it.

on that basis, I'd rather see the card get maxed out on modest improvements to the tax code than paying for some grand high-speed rail project that runs directly from the capitol building to diane feinsteins house or whatever stupid garbage libs dream of blowing money on.

there is a hypothetical "deficit" that matters but we're not even close to it yet, and you don't really address my point that there is not such thing as a "deficit" when all the bills are paid with money printed by the payor. deficits only matter to the extent they represent potential long-term inflation.

It matters because in order to pass senate with 51 votes, they need deficit in year 11 to be zero. The official estimates put out by congress yesterday has a deficit of 150 billion in year 10, so this can't pass the senate without significant changes (easiest would be end tax breaks at 10 years, but good luck with that). I don't know if they could go "nuclear" on the Byrd rule though; I imagine they'd be wary of giving the dems that power.

It looks like a modest screwing of blue state umc's for a modest tax cut for other umc's. According to bloomberg this morning the bottom 35% of households would see no gains, and the big winners would be c-corp entities that previously had high effective rates. Peter King (GOP rep from Long Island) already came out against it. I think enough blue-state GOP congressman will ultimately vote against it to kill it.

coming down hard on property tax and mortgage interest would have too much impact on housing market. this as is will still impact housing market in high COL areas (and in higher end market of not high COL areas) but taking away all housing gimmes at once might be disastrous.

It is extremely dumb. Is there any justification besides helping high property tax states?

States with no property tax at state level will just move to that from income tax

I have gotten zero credit for property taxes since I have been an AMT payer.

Explain how this helps or fucks me? I know zero about it.
