I was looking for a compact, battery powered, digital clock that also has the date, that I can put on my desk and use to refer to the time and date, but apparently such a thing doesn't exit, at least not for a modest price.

I have my digital watch at my desk, which has the time/date, and Windows has the time in the corner, and in some versions the date, but neither is very convenient for desk use.

I found this one at Dollar General for $4. It's not ideal, but I haven't found my ideal one yet.

It works about as well as you'd expect, but I put it on the bookshelf to the left of my desk because the second hand seemed like it could be distracting. The battery compartment is too small and you have to jam the battery in there. Has a 1 yr. warranty, but you have to send $3 for "handling."

Any digital watch has the time and date on it. Someone can easily produce a simple, inexpensive, compact, battery powered desktop clock with the time and date.
