This takes several forms.
You have the most egregious examples designed to make these people feel like they are in imminent danger--"the country is being taken over by racist plumbers that hate you!"--while also trying to convince them that they belong to the same group as owners of capital/production. You have the slightly less obvious ones like the articles about college admissions that are supposed to pull at your heartstrings--"Sophie worked really hard and got into Dartmouth, but she's SAD!" or "Benjamin did everything he could in high school and had nearly a 1600, but he ended up at WUSTL!"--over minutiae that no normal, well adjusted person actually gives a shit about. Then you have the other shit that's meant to make them feel a little less guilty about their consumption choices and career decisions--"corporations are now the moral voice of our country" and "why the VIBRANT new gig economy is great!". The list goes on, but in every case it's painfully obvious that the content is meant to appeal to a sense of superiority driven by profound insecurity and lurking nihilism.
But beyond this there's just the fact that once you read a handful, you've effectively read them all and can easily gauge the zeitgeist of a particular class of people within the country that view themselves as equally lofty and impenetrable--and reading this slop tends to make conversation with these sorts of people painfully dull as you know where each canned point and counterpoint is coming from and how it is a blatant rehash of something a 25 year old Skidmore graduate who spent 4 years editing an amateur newsmag and megapoasting facebook screeds hammered out on a Thursday afternoon for slave wages only attractive to someone who doesn't have to worry about their rent in a major city.
