This dude’s style was called “emo trap” or “mumble rap.” Apparently that’s a big trend right now in music the that these Gen Zmos are listening to. It’s weird getting to an age where you don’t even know what the fuck the kids are listening to. Relatedly, I was at a festival recently where all the 18 year old sluts were going nuts for some EDM shit called “Major Lazer” and I didn’t even know wtf was going on and just stood there sipping my beer like an aspie. Is embracing old age cr or is there something to be said for knowing what these little fuckers are up to?

Lil Peep was off my radar too until the pitchfork article on him, so it’s really the first time I’ve seen a group of youths mourning a popular artist who i knew fuck all about. Kind of a weird feeling

He died of a benzo/painkiller overdose. Rappers now are sad and they don't know why. A lot of the music now is slowed down and babbling style, akin to what it's like being high on Xanax. Xanax is glorified now by rappers like alcohol and crack used to be, and now as opposed to mainly selling it as a path out of poverty, they're singing about using drugs to escape reality and pain. Says a lot about the current culture.

RIP lil Peep.

Yea i know every generation says same thing about todays pop music, even plato had references to this cycle, but this time its different! That was the good stuff!

Also this is sort of pop but still not mainstream. A lot of genres move away from song writing / technical skill to what can only be described as vibe music. Not just in music either

Your not even capable of appreciating music the same way that ppl of that time did you dullard. It was a certain set of experiences that produced the sound, that molded the ear that could appreciate the sound. Miles davis changed as career progressed to match the times. He wantedd to be on the cutting edge. To be live. Adapt or die. Lol if you think mozart would be doing classical music rn if he were reborn. He would be a producer. And probably would blow our fucking minds given the tools hed have at his disposal. Ljl at try hards. Go read that passage about the particular set of experiences that lead to ww1, that produced the sort of men that could have fought in ww1. Same concept more or less applies here.

that applies to literally every form of art. certain cultural periods exist at higher intellectual and spiritual levels than others, and produce better art. what you say above is a truism with no bearing on anything.

The audiences and settings do change. Classical music was created for more intelligent and patient audiences. Modern pop music's target is broader and its purpose is primarily revenue generation. I admittedly don't know much about music and sound (I have a book I want to check out about the latest science on music/sound and the human response to it) but I can see how modern pop music might be a turn off to someone who is looking for music that is more patient and stimulating.

LOL at the threadjacking job you did here, brother. Really impressive work.

Say, what do you think Miles Davis would have to say about the role of IP and copyright law in sample-based music? Or rock music generally for that matter? If I were to tell him that no sample-based music will ever come close to what was possible in terms of both sonics and levels of cultural/contextual meaning prior to the The Turtles case, how do you think he would respond? Bc I can assure that the Puffyocracy that followed the late 80s was a GIGANTIC step backward in hip hop that has never been fully recovered, although it did result in a more intense focus on lyricists as the central artists in the genre.

P.S. Note that these boomer fags are still at it in recent years: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/turtles-lead-whopping-100-million-598746

Last time I saw them was last summer at Bonnarroo. Crowd was all Gen Z types, but the group was going insane. Got tired of hearing those "party time" fog horn sound effects every 3 minutes though, and the strobe lights were tiring after a while.

yes. I'm an oldmo who still goes to music festivals and all sorts of stupid concerts where I am probably the oldest bro there (time I saw Migos I was probably twice as old as many people there). Then again, I know my place, don't try to mix in, stay out of the crazy crowds, etc.

Flattered.

Would you agree with this statement: there is no grounds to prefer Mozart over Lil Peep other than being a try hard resistant to new innovation?

Would you agree with this statement: saying Shakespeare is a superior writer to JK Rowling is entirely unjustified by anything other than personal preference

For 99% of youth that is the case. It is nearly impossible that they will be more receptive to mozart than lil peep. It is possible that mozart provides greater highs that can only be reached by having stretched your ear wide enough that his sounds can enter...but idk... and the genre itself is dead....that i do know.

Alot of the problems with contemp pop existed back then too branding patronage in crowds etc...tolstoy talks aboit this...if i released a batch of songs and said it is newly discovered mozart but it was in fact a college band directors personal shit ...who styles his music after mozart...im writing too much already but that should be enough

This is a given brother. Objective truth is not even clear in science, einstein demonstrated this 80 years ago! That being said I BELIEVE THAT SUCH A DISTINCTION EXISTS AND I WILL TO EXIST AND I WILL TEACH TO OTHERS THAT IT EXISTS AND I WILL DEFEND IT AND ENJOY IT AND LOVE IT

this is what a lot of modern "trap" shows are like these days. At least he didn't have his voice drowning in auto tune like a lot of these guys. Migos were horrible - auto-tuned to death and half the time didn't even rap along to their own lyrics that were playing along
