I understand why people don't like it but it's been the rule for 150 years so it's been priced into people's choices of where to live, work and buy homes. If we were starting from scratch I could see going without it but at this point it's just politically convenient and a huge hit to hardworking people who've reasonably relied on the rule. They could have just capped all deductions or given a higher salt cap rather than striking it all. It's not like the people taking the deduct are benefiting much from state spending either. If they cut this why not cut other deducts? I'd like to stop subsidizing Romney's tithing or some billionaire building a new wing for his pet project museum. The reason we pay high local property tax is to get away from the shit cities and we've paid house prices that reflect deductibility so there's no past windfall. The people taking the deduction are hardworking professionals who don't benefit from state spending and didn't vote for it.
