which would it be and why?

my first choice would be 1876, as the corrupt GOP bargain to elect Hayes over Tilden resulted in the end of Reconstruction and the subsequent century of segregation and oppression of blacks.

second choice is 2000. The Bush presidency was an utter debacle and responsible for the rise of Obama.

I agree with you that a century of oppression wasn't long enough, but I would go back to an earlier election to zero out the civil war and reconstruction entirely.

Gore in 2000.

(My old history knawledge isn't good enough to go back much further.)

Breckenridge.

I would also have Thurmond win in 1948, Nixon win in 1960, and Goldwater Win in 64 (or 68 assuming I could have Nixon Win two terms). Also Perot in 92.
